What a strange topic! Anyways, this topic is spawned from the fact that most weeks I'll mow grass at a pet cemetary. I'll get to see all the headstones ranging from fairly normal to sappy to rather sarcastic. I've got some pretty solid opinions about the place, but what do you guys think? Do you like the idea of having a formal place to bury pets? How formal? What about the cost? (Its rather pricey to reserve a place and buy a headstone). Let me know below!

Honestly, having a pet should involve including them into the family and thus they should be afforded the same privilege as you would afford a family member in the event of their death. I think it should be fine and in fact, encouraged to bury pets in "people" cemeteries alongside you and your family. Then again, I suppose some don't see their pets as members of the family and so this does cater to them nicely (even though I think they should consider pets as family).

I would personally want my pets buried beside me when I have some later on in life in my own later years, but as of the moment I've already had two pets pass away that I've seen buried. Since I don't live in the city area, we own our own mile of woods so we have buried my dog and hamster there. They're both marked with a headstone (we found a place that was willing to make cheap ones for like $50, but they were pretty small but it was still in respects). The dog who passed away, Simba, was very close to us so he was buried in a visible place with a visible headstone, meanwhile the hamster is only a few feet away which the headstone points out. One of my fears of living in a city is I will need a place for a yard before I get an animal, because I could not deal with the fact of being unable to bury my pets, despite how much of a mean person it could make me seem to others.

As another country raised person, pets, particularly dogs, have been a major part of my young life. In all of my 17 years, I've had roughly 5 or so dogs pass away.
In fact, one of them, the oldest, we'd had since I was a baby, even though we lived in a rental while we raised a house on acreage.
All of our dogs have been buried on our land, as members of our family, cause you couldn't be more family than they were. My mother even once said that our dogs were more family than her blood-relations...

So, to that effect, I believe that pet cemeteries are the perfect solution. Many people these days simply don't have the yard space to bury their pets. And... Well, I'm not sure what people normally do with their dead pets... Leave them at a veterinary surgery? Anyway, no matter what they do, burying the deceased is a basic respect for the dead. And if you can't show respect for a deceased member of your family, you certainly don't deserve to own a pet.

I'd say it's always good to treat your pets with respect, so it's good to bury them. That being said it's not the only option out there. They will cremate pets as well which is always nice. Give them a nice urn and such.

This is actually what my mother requested upon the death of her dog a few years back. Considering it now, while I don't care for pets in any form (perhaps because of that dog), cremation may have been a wiser idea.

I only have one reason for this, and it is that having the urn of the pet's ashes enables it to be closer at hand than if it was buried at a cemetery. This can be mitigated somewhat if there is a pet cemetery nearby to where you live, but that may not always be possible (where I am, the nearest one is a full 20 minutes away, so that would be out of the question). Beyond that, I would find burial versus cremation indistinguishable in terms of how to treat the deceased pet.

An animal cemetery would be a lovely idea. As I respect animals with utmost dignity, I would love them to be treated as equals to humans. Therefore, a cemetery dedicated to animals is always a good idea for people who extend their hearts to their companions. I personally do not know any, and I wish I could have known some sooner because I was devastated when my uncle threw the deceased bodies of our bird siblings in the bin. I was crying, and I don't want to remember that.

Honestly I wonder why tax money should go to pet cemetery when burying a pet can be done in so many ways, it's totally unnecessary. You can always bury a pet with respect, no matter the location. A pet cemetery would also take up a lot of space or it'd be full in like a few years because some pets only live for like 1-6 years. What I'm saying that it's an unrealistic idea and that pet can also be send off honorably without a dedicated area to that.

There aren't that many pet cemetaries around where I live, so most of my pets that have been put down have been left with the vet. It sounds a lot harsher when I say it that way, but we really don't have places to bury animals even of cat size, so in our case that was how we sent our pets off respectfully.
Though in late 2014 my mom did get my dog cremated and she got her ashes put in a lovely wooden box that now resides in the living room.

As for the actual ideas of a pet cemetary, I'm definitely not against it. If you want to, you can bury your pets there. Just keep in mind it's not any less respectful to bury them in your backyard, or maybe not bury them at all, as our family had to.
