Hey guys, [member='Aura'] here with another discussion topic for you all! So, with 721 Pokémon currently available, with a whole new bunch on the way in Pokémon Sun and Moon, it's always fun to discuss things about each Pokémon, whether it be their strengths or flaws, and today we'll be discussing the flaws of some Pokémon. There are 18 different types in Pokémon; Normal, Grass, Fire, Water, Fighting, Flying, Poison, Ground, Rock, Bug, Ghost, Electric, Psychic, Ice, Dragon, Dark, Steel and Fairy (of course you all knew that, I just wanted to make them all colourful~), and a Pokémon can either have one or two types, and there can be any combination. There are very common pairings, like Normal / Flying, Grass / Poison and Ground / Rock, but then there are some that don't exist yet, like Normal / Ghost, Fire / Fairy and Electric / Grass. There are some Pokémon whose types match their designs to a T, but then there are some that are a bit... odd. Let's start with the classic example of Charizard. Charizard is a Fire / Flying type from Generation I, and is the final stage of Charmander's evolution. With it's large frame, reptilian features and wings, it surely looks like a dragon, yet it is classified as Fire / Flying instead of Fire / Dragon. Another prime example, using Dragon again, is Gyarados, which is a Water / Flying type. Just like Charizard, it could definitely fit in as a Water / Dragon type, but it gains the Flying type upon evolving from Magikarp. Finally, sticking with the dragon theme, we have Dratini and Dragonair, who are both pure Dragon types, yet their serpentine designs, blue colouration and frequent accommodation of lakes and rivers, they'd be much better suited as pure Water types. There are also a few Pokémon whose typing does suit their design, but could also work with an alternate typing. Pokémon like Pidgey, Taillow, Starly and Pidove, who are classified as Normal / Flying could also be just pure Flying types (on that subject, Hoothoot and Noctowl would work much better as Flying / Psychic types, even if it was just Noctowl who received this change), the Geodude line and Onix, who are classified as Ground / Rock could work as pure Rock types (although that would mean that Steelix needs to be changed from Steel / Ground to Steel / Rock), and Porygon is OK as a pure Normal type, but it would be interesting to see it as a pure Electric type. So, what Pokémon do you think are classified as types that don't match their designs, or which Pokémon which are OK with their current types, but could work better as a different type combination? Put your answer in the comments below and get discussing! As always, this is [member='Aura'], signing out until next time! (Also, I've included the Hex codes for all the colours of the typing in the spoiler below, if you wanna be super-colourful like I was~) Spoiler: Colour Hex Codes Normal - #A8A878 Grass - #78C850 Fire - #FF5030 Water - #6890F0 Fighting - #903028 Flying - #A890F0 Poison - #A040A0 Ground - #E0C068 Rock - #B8A038 Bug - #A8B820 Ghost - #705898 Electric - #F8D030 Psychic - #F85888 Ice - #98D8D8 Dragon - #7038F8 Dark - #705848 Steel - #B8B8D0 Fairy - #F8A0E0
I'd say Vibrava and Flygon are some other weird ones, I love Flygon but how is it ground type? xD And Vibrava is a straight up bug, so the dragon type makes no sense for it, making its whole typing weird.
Many a time does one question himself. Why is Florges fairy and not pure grass? Why is Solgeo Steel and psychic and not steel and fire? Why is golduck Not part Psychic, In its dex entry its mentioned to us psychic attacks for self defence. Why is Doduo part flying?, it cant fly, yet it dodges ground type attacks, How?
It's always bothered me that Palkia is a water type. Why is that man a water type? Also the amount of Pokémon that a clearly flying but aren't flying types, like Illumuse and Volbeat, they don't even have levitate. How does a bug that is clearly flying get hit by an earthquake? This keeps me up at night.
It's actually classified as the "Fairy Pokémon", so it'd make sense if it were a Fairy type. As to why it's the "Fairy Pokémon" (I believe Granbull has the same classification), you'll have to ask Nintendo/GameFreak about that personally.
Gyarados, why flying it makes no sense at all to me just pure water or water/dragon. Then there's Flygon, poor poor Flygon that ended up being part ground type which I don't get it looks way more like a bug so bug seems more logical to me than ground.
Goodra Gooooooooooooooodra Goodra is not a dragon. It doesn't look like a dragon, it doesn't act like a dragon, it's not. a. dragon. It's a poison type, obviously. It has purple-ish liquid dripping from it's body, the word goo is actually in its name, and I'm pretty sure it's as toxic as one can get. So why is it dragon???
This very much, I actually thought it was Steel/Fire for a little while since I first saw the very first announcement until I went and looked at all the news again. I don't dislike Steel/Psychic, it's great but I want my burning-core mecha lion. I don't understand why Nidoqueen and Nidoking have to be part ground type, would be better off as pure poison. Ground typing seems tacked on, they're just beastly animals with horrible poison spikes.
Lucario. I mean, I love the Pokémon, and I love the typing. But Lucario just doesn't look like a Steel-type. Pure Dark is good for Darkrai, but it should absolutely be Dark/Ghost. It has a very ghost-like appearance, and it learns quite a few Ghost-type moves anyway. There is no excuse for why Psyduck and Golduck aren't Water/Psychic. Or any excuse for why Doduo and Dodrio are Flying-type. Mismagius' pure Ghost-typing is fine, but I think it would work well as a Ghost/Psychic-type. The Flebebe line should absolutely be Fairy/Grass. Manaphy, Phione, and the Lake Guardians should absolutely all be part Fairy as well. Palkia doesn't look like a Water-type at all. I think they just made it that because it represents pearl, and pearls come from the ocean (clams specifically, which live in the ocean). Scraggy doesn't look like a Dark-type. It makes sense looking at what Scrafty represents, but I think Scraggy should be pure Fighting and gain the Dark type upon evolving. Koffing and Weezing could work as Poison/Rock types.
Why is Sandile Ground/Dark? It doesn't look like a Dark type at all. Should get the Dark type by evolving into Krookodile Psyduck and Golduck aren't Water/Psychic yet Staryu and Starmie are? Mr. Mime didn't deserve the Fairy sub type. Just keep it Psychic type and call it a day. Pinsir isn't Bug/Fighting which bothers me.
Spoiler: The box of education or respectful diasgreement It's the sand guardian- guardian of the sand! It evolved from something that lives in and makes pits in the sandy desert. Furthermore, Bulbapedia says "An adult antlion and dragonfly are often confused for one another and could draw inspiration from both." Even more interesting, it also says some species of dragonflies are called sand dragons which could account for the type combination. Outside of that, there's loads of stuff in Pokédex entries about it being nicknamed spirit of the desert. All it takes is a little research to explain a lot of "wierd" typings. The alchemy theories explain Solgaleo a bit, that bit of imagery, Solgaleo is not the sun itself, but the lion that eats the sun. Florges's line are not flowers themselves, but fairies that care for flowers. I'd understand fairy/grass (symbiotic relationship, furthermore, symbiosis as an ability) but drop fairy entirely? Come on, the active part of the creature's body is always distinctly fairylike. Eh, it looks kind of aquatic and atlantean. For anyone who doesn't get why Doduo/Dodrio are flying, flying virtually doubles as an "avian" and an "air" type. There's actually a bird type in the game files of the original games funny enough. Source: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_glitch_types Look up Cu Sith, the dog fairy. Thanks again, Bulbapedia. Because sticky fluid creature does not = poison and Game Freak is totally entitled to getting creative with what constitutes a dragon so as to not bore us with the same alternation on a western dragon every generation? Just a note, only Starmie as the Psychic typing. And yeah for everyone that's be saying it, Psyduck and Golduck should probably get that secondary typing, but that makes for three water/psychics in one generation... As for Mr. Mime, it really helps explain the unusual appearance. Fairies make you think of secret mushroom villages and that's frankly what Mr. Mime looks like it's an exile from. Eh, Pinsir could use it, but pure bug is a rare and valuable thing on a fully evolved monster. I like Darkrai being pure dark. The ghostliness comes from the fact it's just a pitch-black shadow, which can seem amorphous in nature. But you could argue either way. Like I said above, there kind of is. It'd be a hard sell. Maybe, but not really. It sorta-kinda could work...but it's not like they seem wrong or empty without it. Okay I think I'm done. Don't take it personally, anyone and of course, some of these are just my unsupported opinion, man. But you might ask me, what typing do I think don't make sense? There's Stunfisk, but they took away the water typing to even out the type distribution in gen 5. I would rather Volbeat and Illumise were part fairy to justify that they look like pool floaties. God I hate those things. I don't really like Armaldo as a bug type...it's not like I don't see plenty of justification for the fact just...Anorith looked a lot more like a bug. I personally would rather Flygon's line was entirely ground/bug but I can't deny dragon makes sense. I'd add normal to Spoink and Grumpig. They can totally pass without a secondary typing of normal or fairy but it's just a suggestion. "Glalie has a body made of rock". The obvious thought is that it could work with the rock typing or the dark typing considering its distant, sinister gaze and propensity for crunching stuff, but you know...whatever. Huntail could be dark since it seems very deep-sea and also does it's share of biting. But there's two other water/darks that generation.
