For context, the setting is based on Pokétopia - the battle theme park where the video game Pokémon Battle Revolution is based on.

In a pandemic-hit Pokémon world, businesses have been hard hit and the park has been no exception. In an effort to recover the financial losses, the park decided to stage a marketing campaign in the form of a tournament to attract more participants and broadcast the tournament to show off its facilities. Trainers are invited to visit the eleven venues to promote the park as part of a touring championship.

However, because of the high volume of participants, there is a housing shortage, to participants are hard-pressed to find places to stay across the park. To be more efficient, Trainers need to go from place to place in order to accommodate their living and travel needs.

I’ll get us started while we think of moves and Yoh is worked out to be either an Espeon or Lugia…

The theme park of Pokétopia was a popular place to host Pokémon battle tournaments that could rival those of regional tournaments. This popularity could be credited to its ten world-class colosseums, plus an eleventh for training purposes. Every year, the park would host competitions with rules for specific venues. The idea was that there would be two sets of championships - the Pokétopia Championship, which used standard competition rules, and the Special Championship, which used special modifications. The championships were hosted by the colosseums and participants were eligible to compete in both. Points were awarded to those who finished closer to the top, and the participant with the most points would be crowned Pokétopia champion or Special champion.

At least, that was what Pokétopia was. As of late, the park has been unable to host any tournaments because of a raging pandemic which out a halt to business. Then the park hit a financial crisis, which resulted in layoffs. Now with the world slowly reopening and the pandemic coming to an end, the park wants to get back into business by hosting a marketing campaign to get its name out there. And what better to do a marketing campaign than hosting a showcase tournament?

Maria, a twelve year old from Larousse City and twice winner of the Pokétopia Championship, knew the plan all too well. She won her first title when she was only nine, and her second when she was eleven. After her record second title for a girl her age, she was placed into the role of one of the park’s administrators and managers. She was also nervous. The thing was, the turnout for this competition was greater than expected! That was good - because it meant great business - but bad, because now they were faced with a housing shortage.

She also knew her cousin Leon, also a participant of the tournament, was also coming back to the park after having been away for the pandemic. For Maria, she simply stayed at the two-storey villa that she, Leon, and their Pokémon would live at while in Pokétopia. The villa was located in Sunset Village, a residential bloc located not far from Sunset Bay where the Sunset Colosseum was based.

It was only just past breakfast that Maria and her Gardevoir, Evergreen, that Maria said, “Oh! Leon is coming today!”

“I told you already…” Evergreen replied telepathically. While still being a Pokémon, Evergreen was thankfully able to communicate with Maria ever since she was a Kirlia. Now, Evergreen accompanied Maria pretty much wherever she went. She was also Maria's only Pokémon who often stayed outside her Poké Ball, except when in competition.

Maria packed her belongings, most crucially her battle pass, and then went to go for a walk to Pokétopia City. She could have taken the train, but she felt like walking. Leon was expected to arrive in a couple hours by airplane. Plus, the airport was located offshore, so Leon would have to take a boat to get to the city gateway. It was there that Maria hoped to meet Leon. She and Evergreen were looking forward to it!

Meanwhile, on the airplane, Leon was seated comfortably on his seat with his Bellossom, Belle, on his lap. He didn't come alone. Joining him were his other Pokémon, who were safely stored in their Poké Balls. Leon had gotten plenty of sleep while on the plane, and he watched the view outside which was nothing but sky and cloud.

Leon stared out the window, thinking about his past experiences with the park. He had plenty of good experiences with Pokétopia. It was fun to explore the park, the city, and participate in events. He even won the Crystal Colosseum tournaments three times, which wasn't bad considering the volume of participants it had each time. Ever since the pandemic started, he wasn't able to visit this place. Now he could. What also concerned him was the number of people visiting the park this time around. Wouldn't there be a housing shortage? If he was near the Sunset Colosseum, he would have stayed at the villa that he and Maria used while visiting the park. This tournament was different though - it was a full tour of the park.

He expected there to be more than just battles too. Maybe there might be parties and games, even banquets. As he looked outside and saw midday begin transitioning to afternoon, he took a look at his battle pass. It seemed like he needed to update it once he arrived.

The intercom went off. "We will be arriving in Pokétopia in just a few minutes." Then the plane descended onto an airstrip located behind the main island. Once the plane slowed to a stop, the intercom said, "Welcome to Pokétopia. Please make sure to collect your belongings, and thank you for choosing to fly with Pokétopia Airlines today." So Leon got out of his seat and prepared to disembark, after collecting his bag in one hand and holding Belle in the other.

The terminal led to a seaport where a pair of ferries in the shapes of a Buizel and a Mantyke were waiting for the passengers.

Leon made his way through the corridor amid the crowd. He had his bag slung over his shoulder and continued to hold Belle in his other arm. This felt really nostalgic! How many times had he walked on this floor? It was like he was back in his second home.

As if there wasn’t a better contrast to the girl’s red hair to Leon’s blue hair, which caught the attention of some fellow Trainers on the walkway, Leon felt the rough bump on his arm and saw the red-haired girl rush to the ferries.

[Hey!] Belle squeaked. [That wasn’t nice.]

Leon shrugged, staying as cool as usual. He felt a little annoyed but decided to leave it be. He had other things to do, like checking in and meeting up with Maria.

Soon enough, he got on the Mantyke ferry and took his seat. It was quite crowded but thankfully there were enough seats for everyone. Leon knew that Pokétopia arranged it such that the number of seats on the plane matched the ferries.

Soon enough, he took a seat near the window and watched the Pokétopia skyline come closer. As the sky became darker, the lights of the facilities gradually grew brighter and brighter, from the Pikachu tower in the middle to the Dugtrio facility and the Regigigas facility decorating the landscape.

Then the ferry arrived at the gateway, near the Gateway Colosseum. Seeing that facility brought a smile to Leon. That stadium really brought him back. After that, he saw the ferry dock.

“We have arrived at Pokétopia! Participants in the Pokétopia Tour, please check in at reception. Enjoy your stay.”

Leon then got up and made his way to disembark.

 

Soon enough, the many Trainers had disembarked within the seaport and had no sooner went through the gateway to the Pikachu Tower where the reception office was. It wasn't too far from the gateway where the seaport was located.

For Leon, he was quite surprised at this many visitors to Pokétopia. Sure, he had seen a lot of visitors in the colosseums themselves already, but this felt different. Perhaps it was because of a housing crisis, so he had heard from Maria. As he walked, he grabbed his Trainer ID and invitation too from his bag.

There were several receptionists at their desks waiting to greet the arrivals, all dressed in the same uniform consisting of a a blue jacket, blue beret, orange cuffs, and orange scarf. To save time, they admitted the visitors in groups.

It was then while in line that he accidentally bumped into the same red-haired girl who had bumped into him earlier, his arm hitting her shoulder.

"Ah! Sorry," he apologised to the girl. Wait, he had seen her before, hadn't he?

Then he and Belle turned their attention to the main receptionist - blonde-haired girl, who was all smiles.

"Welcome to Pokétopia! If this is your first time here, Pokétopia is a battle theme park where many Trainers gather from all over the world. If you have any questions or concerns, let us know here at reception. We're your guides!" the receptionist explained. "We host battles in our world-class facilities, and to participate, you must be issued a battle pass, which is a card containing information about you and your Pokémon.

"Now, if you are a participant in the Pokétopia Tour, we will admit you into pairs. Unfortunately, we have a bit of a housing shortage because of a high volume of participants in the tour and a bunch of our housing facilities have been undergoing maintenance. If you are here with a group, we can make arrangements. Otherwise, if you're on your own, we'll pair you up with someone."

The receptionist smiled. "Not to worry! First, let's get you checked in. Then we'll sort out the placements. I'll get you paired up with whoever's single."

Leon swallowed. Normally, in the past, he would be participating in outings with Maria, but his little cousin was busy handling the administrative stuff for Pokétopia, so that wasn't happening. Seemed he had no choice but to check in as a single Trainer.

He showed the receptionist his battle pass, who said, "Oh, you're returning? Welcome back, Leon," the receptionist smiled at him. "Let me update your Pokémon set here, and you should be good to go... Ah yes, you're participating in the tour, right?" When Leon nodded, the receptionist nodded back. "You're alone too, eh? No Maria? No problem! I'll get you paired with someone... Yes, we've got a housing problem. So this is the best we can do."

After Leon had checked in, Michelle was next. The receptionist took Michelle's invitation to complete her check-in for the Pokétopia Tour and had registered her Pokémon too. Now it was up to Michelle to pick out a design.

The receptionist kept smiling. "Three times Pokémon champion, eh? Hmm..." She looked at Michelle from top to bottom as she completed the registration of Michelle's battle pass. "Oh, try this!" she said, and then she grabbed a paper bag with a bright red box within. It was emanating a lot of heat. "Take this. It's a Magmarizer. You never know if you need a bit of magma energy somewhere. Oh, and just for you, you can access the lounge on Main Street that we reserve for our champions. I'll mark it on your battle pass."

Then she handed Michelle the battle pass. "Right, I better get you set up..." Her eyes wandered to Leon. "You know, since you're both here, I'll pair the two of you!"

Leon's eyes widened and so did Belle's. "Wait... I'm pairing with a girl?"

"We've got a housing shortage, Leon! And Maria's not participating. It is what it is," the receptionist smiled again. "On the plus side, you don't have to spend time looking for her. Normally, we would arrange for pairs to meet up at designated corners in the Gateway Colosseum, where the opening ceremony will occur. So that saves you some time! That said, you should head to the Gateway Colosseum next." At that, she went to help the next Trainer.

Leon swallowed. He had little experience talking with girls outside of talking with Maria (and Evergreen) but he had no choice. He approached the red-haired girl. "Looks like we're paired up. Um... Hi, I'm Leon," he muttered.

Belle blinked. [Oh gosh. This should be interesting.]

 

“Get in your way? That sounds awfully confident of you…” Leon remarked. “It’s nice to meet you… Michelle.”

Then he followed Michelle out of reception to Main Street and eventually to the Pokétopia city gateway. From there, there was a ferry that shuttled people to the colosseum in front of the skyline.

It was also there at the terminal that Leon eventually met up with Maria and Evergreen.

“Leon!” Maria waved at him. “You’re back!”

Evergreen also went forward to hug him. “So! You’re participating again eh?”

Maria looked at Michelle. “And I’m guessing this is your partner eh?” she said to Leon.

 

Leon looked back at Michelle, as he hadn't forgotten her remark from earlier. She was a very ambitious girl, wasn't she?

Maria nudged Leon's side. "Oh? You're rooming together with a girl? That will be interesting." Then she went up to Michelle and shook her hand. "Hi! I'm Maria! I'm one of Pokétopia's administrators, so if there's anything you need, let me know! And I hope you have fun with the tour! Make sure you check in properly when you go to the venues too. If you are near the Sunset Colosseum, then of course you could always just stay at my place. Otherwise, wherever you are, I hope you have fun!"
