This can serve as a little niche for all breeding-related discussions. Here's one to begin with: why do you breed your Pokémon?

Me? I don't battle competitively so I have no need for all the complicated crap, but rather I do it to get offspring of a Pokémon rather than catch new ones, or because I'm weird and think that my Pokémon get lonely and therefore need to breed. I bred my Scizor against the Volcarona in White for that very reason. Sometimes, I breed new Pokémon to try out new movesets. I recently bred my Haunters so I could try out a Hex-Venoshock-Toxic set on the Gastly. Sometiems, I just want to get something with a better nature than the parents. I bred my Gallade and Gardevoir in the hopes of getting a Gallade with a better nature. It backfired, but oh well.

Well, I bred twice. Why? Because I wanted to have Servine and Serperior in my team, that's all thank you.

I consider myself a really good breeder.
I breed for nature, ability, egg moves, and IVs.
The latest games have made it even easier to breed, through having the female passing down her ability and by having everstone always pass down the nature. Coupled with the power items' ability to pass down IVs, it's not unheard of to get a Pokémon with two perfect IVs -Generally Special Attack or Attack and Speed

With the introduction of the shiny charm and Masuda Method, you can even breed for shininess with a 1/1024 chance.
Breeding is just generally really useful.

For the record, I wrote a short but effective breeding guide. It's on the main site.

Slugkid really is a swell breeder! I breed mainly because friends ask me to, or when I get a good Pokémon with a good nature, moveset or ability that I want to share with others.

Sometimes I breed Pokémon simply for egg moves, but when I want one for a serious battle, I'll breed for nature, ability, and IVs. I'm not really a perfectionist...okay scratch that. I just don't have that much patience....but regardless, I do a lot of breeding, to get the desired stats and abilities.

I breed my Pokémon so that I can get a good nature and stuff like egg moves for competitive play with friends.

Only reason I ever bred anything was to fill the Pokédex, where there were Pokémon whose evolved forms were around to catch, but not the previous.

I go for good nature, IVs, and then I'll do EVs with the occasional egg move. I won't accept any IVs under 19 generally for the stat/stats I need

I caught a Ditto of almost every nature just for breeding, aha :| The only ones I don't have are like three of the ones that are neutral.

I just love breeding xD First I did it to complete my dex and than I started to create my Pokémon with special natures or genders I want. Once I breed a spceial female mudkip for a celebi in trade (there were over 100 mudkips...). At last I started to breed for EV training like my eevee.
Oh and I loved breeding for friends~

I used to breed alot back in diamond and pearl because i wanted to become a professional breeder like Brock in the anime (i was 10 give me a break). Now i breed primarily for competitive use,EV training or to trade a Pokémon over at the beggining of the game to start with a different starter

I haven't bred in a while, if I do, it's mainly to get a Pokémon down to level 1 so I can trade it over to a new save file and use it in the main game. In Black 2 and White 2 it's incredibly annoying how the Day care place is like right at the end of the game. I understand why they did it, but still.

For me, I love breeding. My ways are pretty much like Slugkid's, breeding for natures, ivs, ability, and egg moves. But I love trying different sets out and everything, even if it takes a while(about 124 timburrs till i got the nature and the ability I wanted xD, worst Idea ever, but hard work). I can be a lazy breeder or a hardworking breeder, depending on if I wanna make the team/Pokémon fast enough ^_^.

Had to edit this, sorry for putting that Slugkid. Had a different guide on my mind.

I mostly use breeding to get better Pokémon at the end, say before the Elite Four or last gym.

I used to breed eevees so i could have a full eeveelution team, but that stopped in white2 since i caught them all instead this time. Now I breed mostly for Pokédex reasona and the battle frontier or PWT depending on the game

I usually breed my Pokémon so that I can have one that I started with right at level 1. I just enjoy having level 100 Pokémon and have them say "Met at level 1" in the summery. Other than that, there are the times when I want to EV train. I don't usually EV train for competitive battling because I haven't done it in a while, and I know that it can be rather unwelcoming to newcomers. However, seeing that X and Y are trying to make competitive battling and EV training a lot easier, that will probably the time when I get back into it.

I'm not really into breeding, haha. I just do so to complete the dex. I'm weird since I prefer to raise my mon from baby form to fully evolved, ditching the parents. Oh, and I did what Tate did as well. My Butterfree seemed lonely...XD

Lately I've been meaning to breed my Tentacruel to try out a different moveset. That Pokémon has so many viable moves, it's incredible. Right now Tentacruel has Barrier, Toxic, Venoshock, and Surf, which is pretty reliable. I wanted to have the new Tentacool learn Barrier, Poison Jab, Scald, and Hex, to better focus on statuses and make use of the attack stat which isn't bad, really. Most of these moves I can teach to Tentacruel and the breeding will carry down the moves, and then I can reteach him the old ones. I just need to catch a Ditto in Black 2.

I'm also aware of the growing number of Weaviles and Sneasels on my version of White, since that's the Pokémon I've bred the most. I even know how the family tree works 0_0

Apologies for the double post, but the Bump Thread button seems to have disappeared and some new questions require asking.

Now that X and Y have introduced a method of passing down 5 IVs form either parent and allowing female Pokémon to pass down egg moves, has this changed your view on breeding?

It has for me. I have bred several 5 IV and perfect IV Pokémon. Even if just for future breeding purposes, I can easily pass down IVs and natures at the same time, and this has left me with some fantastic Pokémon. I have a few good Digletts that I plan on using to breed an IV perfect Weavile, which would have been incredibly difficult in past generations.

Naturally since I haven't competitively battled before, this could be a great way to get into it. And with the addition of super training, EV training is hardly something to consider.
