    The Underground Palace was filled with hushed whispers as the Empress prepared to send one of her most trusted heroes into the world on a dangerous quest. "Kiku Sugihara, I, Rinna Eiren, The Gallant Love of the Lotus and Empress of Ransei, now ask you this. Do you promise to journey to Nobunaga's castle in Dragnor, and defeat him before he can storm the Aiiro City?" she asked as her two daughters--the crown princess Chiharu and her sister Tenko--waited to see how the woman would respond.

    Kiku bowed low, her tightly bound hair barely moving as her nose almost touched the floor. Koto her Kricketune followed suit her long blade-like antenna brushing along the palace's polished floor.

    "I vow to you my Empress, that I will stop Nobunaga from ever reaching Aiiro City. I swear this on my blood and my soul, my ancestors as my witness." her tone is stern but her voice oddly serene. It had been the first time that the Empress and brought on such a dire mission to her and she did not intend on disappointing her.

    The Empress nodded. "The closest entrance of the Underground Palace that should take you into the wider world emerges in the East Village. Your disguise as a musician and storyteller should allow you to move freely across the realm."

    "While there are many that will harm on us, there are just as many that are loyal to the lotus." Princess Chiharu agreed. "Seek out those loyal to the imperial lotus with the power of your song."

    "I thank you for your guidance my lady and will rally those loyal to the Lotus to our righteous cause. Through song and valor they will know our cause, through honor and victory they will know our strength."

    Kiku rose from her spot, her Kriketune doing the same in one synchronous motion. Her red and black travelling robes swept around her legs gracefully as she rose, revealing the lines and patterns made to mimic her Pokémon partner. Her travelling pack layed neatly behind her ready to be taken on this journey as soon as the Empress had finished her speech. Kiku kept a calm demeanor but inside she was quite excited to start this adventure at long last.

    Two of the imperial guards escorted Kiku to the entrance that would lead out to the East Village. "Good luck!" Crown Princess Chiharu smiled.

    "We will all be asking Arceus' blessings on your quest." Princess Tenko agreed.

    The East Village was an unassuming little town in the eastern corner of Aurora, hence its name. The tomb of Taki, the heroine that had united the kingdoms against a great evil years before, was near the town, It was not unheard of for visitors to pay their respects to Taki as they arrived or departed the area.

    With one last synchronized bow to the Empress, Kiku and her Kricketune smiled as they walked together through the gate into an unattended area of the village. She tuned her shamisen as Koto dusted off her trainer's robes with long strokes of her blade-like arms, very gentle as to not tear anything. As they walked towards the center of the village Kiku looked up to the sky to check on the weather, not wanting her first performance to be cut short by rain.

    Luckily, it was a beautiful day with warm sunshine, singing Fletchlings, and happy townsfolk. Not one of them knew of the turmoil outside the village--or that the imperial family was hiding beneath their feet.

    Kiku and her Kricketune began to harmonize as they approached the town center looking for a nice spot to settle. Kiku whispered to her partner: "Keep an eye out for any transport that might be heading towards the bigger town, information will be the key to our success."

    The town square bustled with activity. The top rumor was Nobunaga's latest harsh law--closing down the theaters and forbidding troupes to travel for being "un-Ranseian". A few theaters, however, were defying Nobunaga and continuing to perform despite the risk of being caught, having their sets, costumes, instruments, and props confiscated, and thrown into prison.

    Luckily, the harsh law did not apply to musicians and storytellers. But many worried that they were next in line in Nobunaga's silencing of the arts and culture.

    Finding a nice spot near a central water feature Kiku and Koto got to work, an energetic duet between her Shamisen and Koto's scythes sounding almost like a voice but not quite. Their harmonies came together and parted as they danced around each other in a traditional farmer's jig. As they spun, Kiku kept her eyes on the crowd, looking for the signs of either travelling merchants or other travelling acts like herself.

    Finishing off the last verse of "The Fisherman's tale" Kiku stepped off the edge of the fountain and collected her things, letting the people that had stopped to listen to her know that she would be back a bit later. Just breaking for lunch as it were.

    She perused the market for a moment until she found the vendor that she had spotted listening to her. She looked over his wares carefully before greeting him. ((what does he sell?))

    "A set of three onigiri will be 300 sen." the merchant smiled.

    He went on. "You likely know well that Nobunaga has tried shutting down the theaters. But some defy him and continue to perform."

    Then a thought occurred to him. "You would do well to befriend the Four Guardians on your travels, miss. They fight for the same cause as you."

    "That sounds like a fantastic idea, thank you for that. I will head there now I think. Many sales and a fine afternoon to you sir." Kiku gave the merchant a short bow, mirrored by Koto. The two went on their way, weaving through the crowd to head to Taki's Tomb. The traveler took one onigiri for herself and gave one to Koto to munch on as they walked.

    The tomb was not far from the East Village, and easy to see from the road, despite its out of the way location. The priestess of the East Village and her apprentices were in charge of caring for the tomb. Many said that Taki's spirit watched over heroes, and if they paid their respects, she would guide and protect them on their own journey.

    The tombstone's epitaph read:

    "Here lies Taki Amaya--may this heroine of Ransei rest eternally."

    Kiku found the tomb easily enough, it seemed quite immaculate and well taken care of. She paused and lowered her head in a silent prayer, she hoped for the heroes blessing for her journey.
