I'd say one of my most solid core pairs is that of gigalith and braviary.
Gigalith, with 252 attack/252 speed/4 spec attack. I run him with 0 IVs in defenses and hp, to make sure he survives with sturdy. I set up the stealth rock, and custap explosion. Bang, one kill. He is then followed with braviary, with adamant, 252 attack/252 speed/ 4hp and a choice scarf. after that handy explosion I can scarf retaliate for another kill, or if needed brave bird or superpower. If I'm completely stuck, I'll scarf u-turn out of there to someone else...

My Greninja and Electravire. Both full of speed and power. Greninjas speed is absolutely maximum. He outspeeds almost anything, so he uses substitute to feel out the opponent. If he can take whats dished out, he goes for it, if not, or more importantly if its electric type, I U-turn to my Motor Drive electravire to take it all in and then hit back hard and fast. (Note the greninja doesn't have protean, making sure the opponent will use the electric type attack again :P)

A Heatran, Chansey, Quagsire, and Clefable core, yes a 4-man core. This combination is just flat out annoying with it being able to stall you out. Unless you have Mold Breaker to take out Clefable and Quagsire, you are pretty much screwed here. Nuff said.
