"Flame Squire Charmander," Kenji put the aforementioned card in the arena area face up and put two more cards on the bench area face down (he forgot to do it earlier). With that out of the way, he's all set for now.

 

(Iirc, aside from attaching an energy card, Mandy can:

• Add any Basic Pokémon to the bench
• Play any Trainer cards in her hand

What will she do before Kenji makes his move? She can do any or all of those or even nothing at all, your choice.)

 

It's Kenji's first turn now. He attached a Fire Energy to his Charmander, then said, "Flame Squire Charmander uses..." with a slight hesitation as he had a look at the card again. "...Scratch."

 

Vicky flinched at the name of the move. That sounded pretty dangerous compared to Scratch. She opened her deck box and looked at her cards once more, trying to think about how to make any potential pull work when her time came.

(I'm using the same HP count coloration as the one @122 Generation uses for running combat scenes: red when < 25%, yellow when < 50%, green otherwise. The max HPs used here match the respective cards' real-life versions.)

Dang, Kenji attached two damage counters to his Charmander, then drew a card -- which so happened to be another Basic Pokémon card -- and put it on the bench right away. And after attaching an Earth (Ground) Energy card to the Charmander because he didn't have any ground-types available at the moment, the boy declared, "Flame Squire Charmander uses Ember."

Satisfied with the resulting damage, Kenji discarded the Fire Energy card that was previously attached to the Charmander. So super effective attacks deal double damage. Noted.

Now waiting for what Mandy would do...

Okay, that escalated quickly. Considering the energy requirements for Kleavor's attacks and comparing it with the current state (1 Bug Energy on Scyther/Kleavor), Kenji thought the Kleavor wouldn't be able to attack for now unless he got Cut's energy requirement wrong. With his free hand ready on the stack of cards-in-waiting, he anticipated any potential moves his opponent might make...

(Since the real-life version of Kleavor V uses 1 Fighting Energy for Cut, which energy card will it be here? And what'll happen to the damage counters (and any remaining energy cards after the retreat cost deduction) when retreating your active mon for one of the benched ones?)

 

Okay, so Cut needs an Earth Energy to function and this Kleavor only had a Bug Energy attached. This somewhat filled Kenji with a little relief for the time being. With that in mind, he did these sequentially:

• Drew a card;
• Switched his Flame Squire Charmander card for Machop the Promising Apprentice (this one?) at the cost of Charmander's Earth Energy;
• Attached the recently drawn Fighting Energy to said Machop; and
• Attacked Kleavor with a Low Kick ("Machop the Promising Apprentice uses Low Kick!").
