Ash dug a coin from a pocket. "Heads, we perform some songs...tails, we perform a scene."

"Tails..." Serena called the toss as the coin went up...

(Future Ash and Future Serena are basically the Ash and Serena we know and love--only they too moonlight in the arts)

"Then you're in for a treat!" a patron smiled. "Ash and Serena are more than worthy of their positions as the Sunrise Troupe's leads!"

Back on the stage, Ash found the coin. "It's tails...any ideas for a two person scene?"

'Journey of the Rainbow Heroes' campfire scene?" Ash suggested.

"That would work--an inn's humble stage wouldn't be large enough to do a fight scene." Serena admitted.

"Some context before we begin our performance tonight..." Ash explains to the audience. "In this scene from the play 'The Rainbow Heroes'; the hero, Prince Mamoru has just embarked on a great journey alongside the rainbow phoenix, Ho'oh. As they camp for the night, their thoughts turn to the road ahead..."

The lights on the simple stage came up on rough set of a campsite somewhere on a plain, as Serena arrived holding a well loved kanegen. In the fiery glow of the setting sun,
The clouds return to ends of the sky and the sea... she sang as she strummed an expectant chord on the mandolin-like instrument.
The birds on a thousand mountains chirrup and call,
Flying in flocks to the woods for the night.
The wild Pokémon go two by two;
All life returns to their dens.
A crescent moon breaks through the dusk,
As countless points of starlight shimmer.

"It is a peaceful night...but doesn't it feel strange to be out during the night?" Ash asked as he relaxed before the prop campfire made out of streamers.

"I have tried to meet Lugia and visit for a while, but his large shadow shrouds my light." Serena replied, to some knowing laughter. "We can only visit for a few minutes, as any longer would send the mortals into a panic."

"I see..." Ash mused. "How much further is the Emerald Forest from here?"

"At least five days' journey; if conditions are good and we do not meet yokai, rogues or thieves along the way." Serena replied. "The spirits of nature know much of what is going on in the world--you would do well to heed what they tell you, should you encounter one."

"How do I tell a nature spirit from a yokai disguised as one?" Ash wondered.

A yokai fears the song in the world's heart... Serena sang.
So they do what they can to destroy it.
You should rise to meet them with the song and the fire in your heart!

The trill of a flute makes their heart race...
A chord of the moji makes them shudder...
The song of the tikin spurs them to run,
And the song of the harp turns their ambitions to mere clutter!

"Then let's make as much noise as we can, to keep them away!" Ash suggested, readying his well loved bansi to play.

With that, the inn rang with the beautiful flute's festive song, to thunderous applause when the song and the scene ended.

Even Mio was impressed by the performance. Even though her sacred duties meant she couldn't go to the theater that often, studying actors did give her some ideas on how to liven up the sacred dramas performed on major holidays.

Ash and Serena were stunned at the generous tips. "Thank you..." Serena stammered.

"As theater performers, we hear a lot of interesting things on the road..." Ash explained. "That, and we can move across the land without evil sects and rogues having a clue."
