It's been a couple of months, but Nintendo has finally calculated that Pokémon OR/AS sold about 9.94 million copies which rounds it up to 10 million and it is a huge number of copies, even for the Pokémon franchise, so this has been successful, since OR/AS came out in November!
If you look at all main stream Pokémon games, it's at the bottom of the list for now, but if you compare it to the spinoff games, as a average/mean, it doesn't do all that bad.
Here's a bit of stats about sales of other Pokémon Games throughout the franchise, so we can compare~!
The Most selling Pokémon Game is Pokémon Red/Blue/Green (GB) with 31.38 copies back in 1998.
    - The Original Hoenn region,Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire (GBA) back in 2002 sold 16.22 Million Copies.
-Pokémon X and Y (3DS) sold 13.70 Million Copies since its release in 2013.
-As for the highest grossing spinoff it's the original Pokémon Pinball on the Game boy back in 1999. That sold 5.31 million copies.
-The Lowest Grossing spinoff Pokémon game is Pokepark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure with 1.25 Million copies.

Kind of shocked it's doing as good as it is, but the sales still pale in comparison to other games. Historically, Hoenn is the least popular region by number of games sold:

    Generation I:
    Red/Blue/Green/Yellow combined sales: 46.02
    Red/Blue/Green: 31.38
    Yellow: 14.64

    Generation II:
Gold, Silver, and Crystal combined sales: 29.49
    Gold and Silver: 23.10
    Crystal: 6.39

    Generation III (excluding remakes):
Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald combined sales: 22.54
    Ruby and Sapphire: 16.22
    Emerald: 6.32

    Generation IV (excluding remakes):
Diamond, Pearl and Platinum combined sales: 25.23
    Diamond and Pearl: 17.63
    Platinum: 7.60

    Generation V:
Black and White, & Black 2 and White 2 combined sales: 24.12
    Black and White: 15.60
    Black 2 and White 2: 8.52

    Remake and overall region Sales:
    FireRed and LeafGreen sales: 12.00
Combined Kanto games sold (Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen): 58.02

    HeartGold and SoulSilver sales: 12.72
Combined Johto games sold (Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver): 42.21

Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire sales: 9.94
Combined Hoenn games sold (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: 32.48

I don't expect OR/AS to exceed the 12 million mark, and as the numbers trend shows, if we ever get D/P and/or B/W remakes, the numbers will most likely still be greater than the Hoenn games.

To be honest, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are "hot" sellers partially because of the horrible "7.8" meme that the anti-IGN fanbase created. Thousands of non-Pokémon fans picked up on it, which likely influenced them to buy a copy of OR or AS.

Not really as far as I know people in my "circle" don't look well to Gen 5, only saying they played because it was the next gen, they overall hated it and I think Nintendo got that as they barely stayed in gen 5 for 2-3 years? which is much lower than the average gen... Gen 6 brought popularity back, but will it be around for Gen 7?

Looking at the stats, I'm kinda surprised HGSS didn't do better since they are amazing games imo, but oh well. I guess ORAS did pretty fine, seeing as it's only been 7 months since its release.

looking back how are B2/W2 lower than W/B? B/W where better plot wise but... B2/W2 worked better and more smoothly for me in plot, action, and everything else even adding a hard mode!

That's not a bad number at all for being out for, what, six months? It's only three million away from matching X and Y. Give it a year, and those numbers will match.
