    The lights went down, hiding Martine's exit. Once sure Martine was offstage, the orchestra started the intro to "My Beautiful Mirage. Oohs and ahs filled the air as the lights came up on the garden set

    Alyssa's heart was almost melting by the time she had finished. She could hardly even breathe by the time the song was over. It was a spectacular performance for her.

    The audience murmured in concern before Melody materialized on the stage again. "Fortunately for Princess Caliste, she escaped from her pursuers and returned to the castle safely."

    The audience heaved a sigh of relief as she continued "But little did anyone know the attempted ambush was part of a plot--a new play was due to premiere the next evening, and with the princess kidnapped, Captain Vernet planned to take the throne himself during the climax of the first act!"

    A tense stinger played as the lights came up on an underground storeroom somewhere in the castle. The boy playing Captain Vernet, now clad in a black and navy suit with silver trim, addressed three extras playing bandits. "The princess has been captured, I take it?"

    "Well, sir, you see..." one stammered.

    "We tried to capture her..." the second one explained.

    "But she screamed for help, so we ran..." the third one added.

    "You ran?" the boy asked over a tense stinger.

    "We didn't want the musketeers to catch us!" the third one protested.

    The boy let out a sigh that was half angry, and half frustrated. He then screamed "LILIANE!!!!"

    Seconds later, a dark haired girl in a white, gold, and green tunic-like outfit dashed onto the stage. "You yelled, sir?" she asked, making the nervous audience giggle.

    "THROW THESE THREE INTO THE PIT OF ORDEALS!" the boy playing Captain Vernet demanded.

    "Okay! One trip to the Pit of Ordeals, coming up!" the girl playing Liliane smiled as she hurried over to a gold lever hidden in the wall.

    "No! Anything but the Pit of Ordeals!" the second bandit protested.

    "Happy landings--if you survive, that is." With that, the girl pulled the lever, sending the three bandits falling through a trap door. "Don't worry, those three have been through the Pit of Ordeals before--they should make it out in about...a week." she assured the audience before addressing the boy playing Captain Vernet. "By the way, Captain...the princess wishes to see you."

    The boy sighed. "Don't tell me she wants to rant about not finding a husband she loves again..."

    Melody narrating quieted the audience's laughter. "Princess Caliste actually feared for her life, and wanted to talk to Captain Vernet about having a musketeer escort, not knowing about Vernet's plot..."

    (The lights come up on Captain Vernet and Princess Caliste in a room in the palace. Nichole is by Caliste's side as Vernet bows before them.)

    Vernet: My lady, it is a pleasure to be in your presence...

    Caliste: I have called you here with one request...I want bodyguards!

    (Vernet gasps at this)

    Caliste: Not just any bodyguards--musketeer bodyguards! (she gestures to a window, where musketeer silhouettes are seen.)

    Vernet: Okay--I will have a unit prepared in three days. (he turns to leave)

    Nichole: Not so fast! (she drags Vernet back in the scene.)

    Caliste: Have that unit ready in ten minutes!

    (Vernet isn't sure what to make of the princess' request to have a unit of musketeers ready in ten minutes at first. It isn't until he hears Eliwood singing offstage that he gets an idea.)

    Vernet: Oh yes, I just remembered some new recruits...they will protect you as their first mission!

    Caliste: Good! This whole mess is a royal pain in the neck.

    (With that, Nichole and Caliste depart.)

    Vernet(aside): I'll show you what a pain in the neck REALLY is, princess!
