@SAF "That's okay...I have more left to practice." Ash assured Nora before preparing to play again. "Continuing with something from the bansi solo repertoire; here is 'Journey to the Aiiro City' With that, he started the stately first movement... (what Ash performs)
Okay, seems like Nora was wrong when she thought she missed Ash's practice session. She listened to the song with a bit of nostalgic feeling deep down.
@SAF The slow movement then gave way to a festive fast movement. For a moment, it seemed as if the audience was in the ancient city that once stood on Indigo Plateau. No one seemed to notice that Brock had arrived and joined in with the harp-like vina. The bansi and vina together had long been revered as "the friends of song"--and hearing the boys play together carried on the long tradition.
It took Nora quite sometime to notice an additional instrument joining in. And when she did, she just gasped in surprise upon seeing Brock, of all people, playing the familiar harp-like instrument. Familiar to Nora, at least.
@SAF The beautiful bow shaped harp Brock cradled in his arms was attracting a crowd as both boys debated what to play next. Whatever they decided to play, it would be heard all across campus. It helped that the boys were both masters of their instruments, and played them competitively.
Arin listened to the deep harp notes - it definitely was a lot sharper and clearer than the qin back home.
@ChocoChicken @SAF About then, the boys appeared to be wrapping up their negotiation on what to play next. Ash needed a break to rest, so the two agreed to let Brock perform his own solo while Ash rested--and demonstrate why Brock was a three time vina champion.
Both the boys seemed extremely skilled in their instruments - Arin wondered how long it had taken them to learn everything that they knew.
@ChocoChicken @SAF In the stage area, Brock started the playful tune "Golden Fletchling Welcomes Spring". It was one of his favorite short pieces for competitions, or a quick demo tune if someone wanted a full song. The boys had played their ancient instruments ever since their first trip to Johto--and had gotten very good in the years since. (click the linked title to hear the real tune)
As a big fan of Brock since The Three Musketeers play weeks ago, Ava enthusiastically listened to his solo performance. She even bobbed her head to the tune. As for Nora, she noticed Arin nearby. She turned to them, asking, "Well? Whadda ya think?" (Let's poke @ChocoChicken for this one~)
Now this one definitely seemed like a song straight out of their country - Arin had heard that a lot of Kantonian culture had been derived from theirs, after all. "There's definitely some influence from my home region in this, maybe it's that almost-glissando on some of them?"
@ChocoChicken Brock nodded. "Yes--the vina shares some playing techniques with the zither-like koshou. This includes the gliss." (koshou=the Kantonian pronunciation of the real instrument, the Chinese guzheng)
"Glissando..." Nora might not understand the instruments from Arin's home region, but she did know what glissando is. It reminded her of the other day when she saw a violinist doing it during a break between practice sessions. They just did it for funsies, that's all.
"Koshou..." Arin took a moment. "...could I get a translation of what that instrument is?" They didn't exactly know Kantonian.
@ChocoChicken (Okay if I call Poke-China Shenzou? It comes from one of the real ancient names for China, Shenzhou)
@ChocoChicken "I think the Shenzou pronunciation is 'guzheng'..." Brock replied. He was probably butchering the language, but Shenzouian characters were slightly different from Kantonian characters.
"Ah right, the 古箏 (gǔ zhēng)," Arin nodded, before adding a quick explanation for Nora. "It's kind of like a guitar or harp - a rectangular one with the strings layered over top."
