One of my biggest pet peeves is people who always love to attack pop music. "Pop trash," "pop garbage," etc. Where do you stand on pop music? Is it all bad? Is there some redemption to be had? What do you think of people who critique it this way?

How I see it is this: What you're referring to when you say "Pop trash" is radio hits. Yeah, sure, Taylor Swift may not be a lyrical genius, and The Weeknd isn't exactly Shakespeare, but it can still be fun music. Marina and the Diamonds is widely considered to be a pop artist, and I personally think her lyrics contain plenty of depth and serious concepts that lead to serious thought. Troye Sivan is another example of a pop artist who has interesting and captivating artistry. And this doesn't exactly mean all pop music is bad, either. Just popular music. Pop isn't short for popular, it's just a genre. The name came from the fact that it's essentially a foil of rock and roll.

So, what are your thoughts on pop music?

I think music should be judged by the music and not by the artist. Sure, some people known as "pop idols" have gone completely crazy, but that doesn't mean we should write off the entire pop genre as crap. I really enjoy to listen to happy songs with a catchy melody and understandable lyrics to relax or during a break. Pop music is great for that. Every music genre has its own flaws and qualities, and so does pop.

Exactly what Megaraii said, music can't just be judged because of the artist, that's unfair bias. I'm typically not a fan of pop music, and I'm inclined to dislike it because of my experience, but that doesn't mean that I hate it, or even dislike all of it. There are many pop songs that I like and find catchy. Even if I don't like a pop song that I hear, I still recognize that people put a lot time and effort into it. My favorite type of pop music is music that is funk-based, such as Uptown Funk. I'm a huge fan of jazz, and funk is a sub-category of jazz, so anything with a good groove is great in my books.

I mostly listened to pop for the relatable themes present
and the sense of empowerment it brings.

I guess you could count my pop collection as a tad "girly"
But I like the cutesy, girly singers.

I get a sense of femininity from it
and for a guy, that's okay.

    Examples of what I like
    Hilary Duff, The Veronicas
    Avril Lavigne, Vanessa Carlton
    Natalie Imbruglia etc

Pop is fairly boring to me, but there's a ton of great pop songs all the same time. Pop Rock is probably where I'll find the most enjoyment out of it. :)

I think that pop music has its perks. However, it's got way too much slow EDM. Kind of depressing... And that's before pop's Bojack Horseman, Mike Posner, released "I took a pill in Ibiza".

I don't think pop is bad at all. Just overplayed if anything. Pop music is very energizing and upbeat, though that is slowing changing with the times with more songs having a slower tempo taking the scene.
