So lately it seems that Pokémon has its main games with its legendaries as a trio to represent a certain theme. Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza for land, sea, and sky. Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina for time, space, and antimatter. Reshiram, Zekrom, and Kyurem for yin, yang, and wuji, and last but not least, Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde for life, destruction, and order. So what theme of three would you expect to see or themes at all. Personally I'd love to see a theme about destiny with maybe one legendary ruling over good fortunes and the other ruling over bad luck and maybe the third just being the control of destiny or something, I don't really know.

I had an inkling of an idea similar to your good fortune and bad luck, but I was more on the line of making it fate versus luck, neither one necessarily with a good or bad modifier. Or maybe I just played that one level from N64 Goldeneye too much. "Half of everything is luck." "And the other half?" *alarms and explosions* "Fate."

More recently than that I've been considering the natural world (plus old tradition) and the manmade world (plus new innovation). As much as modern technology is learning to help those two work in harmony, they do still clash, and personifications of those two concepts might be interesting to throw against each other in battle.

There has yet to be a brains vs brawn type of legend trio. Although rather stereotypical, it would be cool to perhaps get a psychic/dragon and a fighting/dragon as legendaries. As for a 3rd Pokémon in the trio, perhaps a legendary of courage/determination? Although we already have a being of willpower...

Another possible trio of legendaries could embody want vs. necessity, with a balancing 3rd of wisdom.

Introduce Light type, and give a theme for Light, Dark, and Twilight. This is the best I could come up with. It's simple, but could very easily work in a simple Pokémon game plot.

I like the idea of Good Luck Bad Luck and Fate already discussed,
Also you could do something like technology nature and Balance,
or maybe Justice Mercy and Sacrifice.

I think there doesn't always have to be a trio, so if it comes to and there's only two legends in a game, I think of Dusk and Dawn! It's basically the legend that rules in the morning and a legend that rules at night.I just think this would be a nice theme.
