Gen 1: Bulbasaur
I prefer the underdog of starters. Advantage over the first 4 gyms of the game? Check. Stupidly high amounts of crits with Razor Leaf because of broken Gen 1 mechanics? Check. Good starting dual type? Check. All in all, I like Bulbasaur's line because it's the best Gen 1 starter. FIGHT ME.
Gen 2: Cyndaquil
I go from underdog to overpicked. Cyndaquil is amazing, and Typhlosion is badass. Like Bulbasaur, Cyndaquil has a good start but not as good, being halted at the 3rd gym. (THAT FUCKING MILTANK) Mid game isn't too good either, sure you have a Steel type gym to fight, but that Steelix can really mess your day up. Also, Chuck is a pain in the ass. Pryce is easy but Clair is where things get difficult, Typhlosion is really helpful during the Elite 4 though, and Kanto is a breeze as well.
Gen 3: Treecko
Aaand we're back to the underdog. Treecko is my second favorite starter (guess who's first). In Gen 3, Treecko was amazing due to Leaf Blade being Special and learning Pursuit and Quick Attack early is another plus. Also, Bullet Seed is the first TM you get, guess who learns it? The downside of Treecko is, you are going to keep Mega Drain and Bullet Seed for awhile, Level 29 to be exact, where Grovyle FINALLY learns Leaf Blade. Also if you play like me, the Giga Drain TM isn't too far either.
Gen 5: Snivy
Overpick city here we come! Gen 5 starters all have a rough early game because of the first gym but Snivy really has it rough. Snivy is not tanky at all unless it's a Serperior and that Herdier at the 2nd gym hits like a truck. Burgh will ruin you too and Elesa's Emolgas are assholes. Late-midgame is where Snivy shines. Sure, Brycen and Drayden/Iris are painful but like any other Pokémon game, you should have a well balanced team to handle them. Elite 4 is a breeze too. Black 2 and White 2 is where Snivy REALLY struggles, 2nd Gym is a Poison gym and I guarantee Snivy will be sitting out for 3 gyms straight after Cheren, but Snivy starts shining earlier than Black/White.
Gen 6: Froakie
Oh god here we go. Greninja is a competitive BEAST and Froakie's line is amazing in game. Froakie is good in every gym (I do mean EVERY) and X/Y is a joke because of Greninja. Seriously, it's laughable how easy X/Y is with Greninja. I've done a SOLO RUN with just a Greninja and it was pathetically easy.
Gen 7: Rowlet
It's. An. OWL. AAAAAAAAAAAAAA. Having a trait a certain other Grass starter has (Bulbasaur) Rowlet proves that the Grass starters are usually the best (Unless you are Chespin or Chikorita)
You may notice that I pick Grass type starters more than Fire Types which is odd because, well look at me, My favorite starter/Pokémon is Infernape a Fire type, my username has the word "Blazing" in it and my signature, my quote is "BURN IT DOWN". I swear that isn't intentional but it just happens. The Grass starters usually appeal to me more than the other types.
