There are some moves that Pokémon really shouldn't learn out there, such as a large variety of Pokémon that would do horribly in water learning Surf (Rhydon, Aggron). and Elgyem/Beheeyem being able to learn Steel Wing. Not to mention one of the strangestly distributed ones: Fly. Somehow Pokémon such as Fletchling and Pidgey can pick up the character and move them across whole regions. And of course my favorite: Gastly knowing elemental punches.

What moves that are currently available to some Pokémon do you think don't belong? Why? Should GF make an effort to take them out of future games, or would that be too much trouble?

I don't think they should remove any already given weird moves, but avoid giving them to Pokémon in the future. I always find it so weird that teeny bird Pokémon can learn Fly, but a variety of bug/flying Pokémon, which are larger than those lil' birdies, cannot learn them. Ledyba, butterfree, etc. I don't think these Pokémon should be allowed to learn Fly, I'm just trying to make a point that teeny bird Pokémon (pidgey, starly, u know the ones) shouldn't be allowed either because of their size. It just. . Doesn't make sense. I dunno.

I'm also wary about Miltank and Slurpuff being able to use Surf. They just don't look as though they could swim, y'know? Or, well, not well enough to carry a person along without drowning.

Wooper learning Ice Punch always confused me as a kid. Same goes for Shroomish learning Focus Punch. But what really grinds my gears is that Growllithe cannot, I repeat CANNOT, learn Growl. Why? Growl is in its name, for Petes sake!

    Okay, rant mode over.

I never understood how prinplup could learn metal claw when he is a penguin that has flippers.

Things like shaymin learning earth power seem random, rock polish for the purely metal metagross, and a lot of the punches. Something like ampharos would never in a real battle have the opportunity to punch somebody, its arms are waaaaaaaaaaaay too short. Iron tail is another of those moves in general that doesn't make much sense on most Pokémon; pikachu has the magical ability to turn part of its body into metal. Not that gamefreak can/will remove any of these moves though, the transportation across games would be a nightmare. I'll just enjoy my laughs instead

I don't think silly moves should be removed, it wouldn't really work for trading to new games imho. I do think that game freak should take a bit more consideration into what Pokémon can learn what moves. Such as not giving punch moves to Pokémon without fists, and not giving Pokémon like ambipom the inexplicable ability to learn shadow ball and flamethrower. .-.

I also think they should balance out moves by offensive ability as well as simple rational sense. Elsewise, we'll have more Pokémon like sceptile that have more moves in the stat they aren't as strong in, or Pokémon like klingklang with virtually no offensive capability on their good stat.

I for one, never understood how doduo/dodrio could learn fly, when it is purely a flightless bird Pokémon.
I think they kind of went silly with him/her learning that move. In my personal opinion.

We are talking about weird moves here, but let's look at some totally stupid moves.

For example, Solid as a Solrock, Ash's Gym battle with Tate and Liza...

Yeah... That is the most stupidest move I've ever seen.
Swellow really should've fainted from that... Not turned into a freaking Skarmory

What came to mind was gastric acid. But that's not a problem with a specific Pokémon. Well... Actually not a problem with the move at all. Just what it implies. Gastric. Latin for of the stomach. Acid. A major component of digestive juices. So by using gastric acid, you are literally throwing up onto your opponents.

I never really understood why giants like Aggron, Rhyperior, and Tyranitar could learn Surf. I mean, how would they even float? They're also weak to water so what's up with that?

I'm also confused as to how some grass types could learn Flash. Grovyle and Treecko I can understand, maybe their eyes glow or something but Victreebel? Meganium? Jumpluff? Chesnaught? Where does the light come from?

    It's probably something like this:

Rapidash learning bounce is a little questionable along with Togekiss learning Focus punch. They just don't seem like they have the capabilities. Also, radicate mastering the elements is a hoot.

I don't know how Pokémon like pidgey could learn fly, i think they should give a condition on it like when pidgey gets evolved in pidgeot only then it can learn fly.
Hilda's opinion on doduo is right. It can't learn fly at any cost. Its a bird Pokémon similar to ostrich and ostrich Dont fly.

I don't understand Bone Rush on Lucario. Fighting and Steel, not Ground, and no bone motif in his design. If anything, I think he probably doesn't have bones, but rather a metallic skeleton of some kind. All I can think of is the devs really wanted him to have something anti-fire besides the ubiquitous earthquake, and that one won the dartboard toss.

I agree with some people above that it's weird how a lot of Normal-types can learn TMs of nearly every type, but I think that's just as a trait of Normal type. Since these species aren't specifically tethered to a particular elemental strength, they instead have a little bit of the ability of all types, which makes them flexible insofar as their ability to learn attacks. Maybe that's just pressing the explanation, but I think it works in-world.
