When you guys draw do you like to use references? Or do you like to try to draw things from scratch? If you do both, which do you think has a better outcome? I personally use multiple references because I like to see the different angles of whatever I'm drawing. It makes it easier to pose characters. But after using references for a specific thing for a long period of time I'll try to draw it from scratch to see how well I can remember it from memory.
I like to use multiple references. Like for a picture of a Bigjaw from the pirate RP. Im gonna do an evolved form of him so I’m using a Feraligatr and Bowser from super Mario strikers since he has claws. They’re not like Bigjaw’s Metal Claw But it’s close enough in posing and stuff to use as a reference
I like to draw fanart, so using references is now a part of the art process for me. It definitely helps me to have a reminder of what I'm drawing in front of my face
Yes. ... Lol seriously, I almost can't draw without references. I'll always forget something. The only things I can draw from memory are a few Pokémon x)
To be honest I'm pretty lazy when it comes to referencing. I only do it if I'm doing fanart or something, but other than that I just draw stuff of the top of my head.
I use tonnes of refernces, fromt he pose to the shading to the actual features. But I recently did a pretty nice job on sketching my night frights without any references for the poses, I just needed to see the small details to draw them. I think it shows a sign of improvement that I was able to do that.
I use references a good amount, although it's not always the character. Sometimes it's the pose I'm trying to do, or clothing. I also look up color schemes so I don't end up making something that looks too bright or murky. I do draw without references, though, and try drawing without references sometimes. Note: It's never a bad thing to use references!
That's a big sign of improvement! I've never understood why so many artists think refs are a bad thing. @ everyone listen to shad she speaks the entire truth.
Right now I do and I use it quite a lot because I'm trying my hands at digital art which I've never done before and I haven't drawn in literally years so what skills I had are super rusty.
@Hawks I feel that some artists mistake using references as stealing or tracing art. Same can be said about proper base usage- some artists deal with it and others freak out stating that it's stealing/tracing or not real art. Bases are totally a different subject, but sometimes gets mixed in with tracing/stealing.
I honestly have no problem with people tracing art? As long as they don't upload it and credit it as their own. I guess if they use it more as a learning tool to see how pencil strokes work and to get it embedded into muscle memory. But I can see how a lot of people would consider it stealing.
