Do you guys plan out your characters' personalities ahead of time, or do you just write and let their personalities out through your writing? A mixture of both?

Improv all the way! I never plan out characters. Sometimes, I'll build up backstories just over time, but I never have a pre-planned character. They're a bit harder to work with, in my opinion. :3

Only with some and they usually end up going a different way anyway, most of them just seem to come on their own really even when I have already planned the personality it just seems like the characters have a mind of their own sometimes and go a completely different way than initially planned.

I always make sure my characters have their own personalities before a story. Sometimes I have them change over time during the rps ewe'

Depends, I'll have a basic personality written out and then flesh it out as I'm writing. Or if I know what personality I want them to have, I'll put it down.

It very much depends on the character. Some developments will happen naturally as I write them while some are planed ahead. Any characters I borrow from my story tend to have pre-planned or "set in stone" character development since I have my story very planned out, especially in terms of how the characters grow. But characters I make specifically for an rp are far more likely to surprise me with revelations of their past I didn't know about, certain likes or dislikes I didn't plan, etc.
