Is RWBY considered an anime? It has a Japanese dub and a manga after all- RWBY! One of my favorite shows Rooster Teeth has produced. With the release of Volume 6, the plot is really moving forward and things are getting serious. What do you think about it- the volume(s) or the series as a whole? If you haven't watched it, do you plan to? How do you feel about the darker tone the show is taking? Feel free to discuss it all here.
I haven't seen the latest season and I'm not sure if I will. I loved the series, it's what truly got me into RT but idk I've just lost interest. I kinda consider it an honorary anime, or like a reverse one. I remember watching interviews were Lindsey (?) talked about how fans over in Japan preferred the English version with subtitles rather than the dubs they did, just like how many prefer actual anime which I found kinda funny
RWBY is one of my favorite shows (can you tell by my avatar and signature). Especially now that the show has grown into its darker tone and change in animation style. Volumes 4 and 5 are what I fondly dub as the series “puberty”, not because it was at all bad but because there was a lot of change. With volume 6 the show seems a lot more comfortable in its own skin and I’m excited for volume 7.
Going forward, I'm concerned. By no means do I think RWBY is bad, it just has some concerning marks for me. Firstly the tone. I don't dislike darker tones, but I don't think it should stay darker. RWBY was originally designed to be very light hearted, and that's reflected in its characters. Those characters don't really do well in a darker setting, especially Ruby. Not to metion Ruby's "Oh my gosh please nerf" super power. This isn't a bad thing, and I like how the creators are setting it up to be more tactical use of the power rather than OP. I'd like to see Ruby debate on what part in a fight to use the power and dealing with the consequences. However, I can't help be see that this is ripe for exploitation. Then there's the lore dump of the third episode. I don't mind the lore, I just hate that it was a lore dump. It really felt unnatural and really blew all the mystery I had for the series. After that episode, I almost felt like the world had shown me everything, and there was no reason to keep watching. This episode really should have not existed and they should have just stretched the lore over the rest of the series, even have the final battle reveal new things as she's ranting. I'm concerned going forward, I feel like it could turn out pretty good, but I also feel like the writers aren't taking the best approach.
