For those of you who haven't heard, Sword Art Online (SAO), a show about gamers getting stuck in a virtual reality MMO and dying in real life when they die in the game, will more than likely be receiving its own virtual reality game.

Yes, that's right. There's no word yet on if the game will remain true to the show and kill you in real life if you die in the game, but don't be surprised if that's a feature!

How do you guys feel about this? Anyone else think it's hilarious/weird that this, of all things, will be getting one of (if not the) first virtual reality MMO?

    So meta.

That's really all I can say here.

    So meta.

I've only seen a few episodes of SAO (though I really liked what I saw), and I think it would make for a fun game, especially considering its self-acknowledgement that it is a game removing the need for a suspension of disbelief. Contrary to actual death being a feature (I think that's unlikely at best), it would be interesting if there was a character permadeath feature instead. Your player runs out of HP and boom, back to the chargen screen, no recovery. That would really make the game really unique and fun (for some kinds of players).

Well firstly I wouldn't put down the idea of you dying in real life I mean common so many games are trying to entice people to buy it cause its so realistic and when it effects your real life that is the highest form of realism you can go!!! So with that I feel that they will invent a nervegear by attaching a headset to an occulus rift and duct taping that to a small microwave to fry your brain (bomb) inside a motorcycle helmet.

    This probably won't end well.

I really like Zero's idea though, I've wanted to make an MMO like that myself.

There was some sarcasm in the main post. :P Obviously, they wouldn't really do that (or so we can hope).

Now, as much as it's hated... Runescape does have a permadeath feature. But... It's Runescape. So, there's that.

I'll just stay back here and hope they come out with a VR Log Horizon MMO... So much more interesting than what SAO would be... Besides, as a game ALO interests me 20x more, even if the first ALO arc sucked more than most of SAO (except Mother Rosario arc)

My personal opinion. Permadeath would be kind of? cool. There's also the Aincrad Online game in dev, though it's just a normal mmo.

I personally think that any virtual reality game would be awesome, especially if it were like they show it in anime control wise. I also think that SAO/ALO have interesting gameplay mechanics. So if it doesn't change except for getting rid of the darker side, that'd be awesome. I kind of hope that there isn't aim helpers like in SAO though. Then it'd be combining two of the activities I love, sword-fighting and video games. Sadly, I think surgery would be required for that level of control, as your brain would need a way to transmit its signal to the device. It will most likely be something that requires actual physical movement.

Gonna stay skeptical for now. VR's not even been around for much more than 5 years so I'm not expecting something amazing right away. It's super cool they're already trying stuff like this though, makes you wonder what else is to come in the future. For now the hardware probably isn't optimized yet and there haven't been any major games released specifically with VR in mind. If it does get released within the next two years it'll probably be super expensive too. Of course technical advancements take a few years to become ripe for commercial use so it's unthinkable we might see a similar game to SAO in 2020. For now it still seems too far fetched, but this is definitely promising news.

Hmm... I really like the idea, but I'm not sure how they would make this work though. I mean, the idea is cool and all, but how do you plan to let VR work with a gaming platform currently in existence?
Then again, I don't know much about gaming lol

They'd probably design one from scratch, though that takes up much more time, manpower and resources. I don't think technology is at that level yet, and I don't know if it ever will be.

Dude I'm so wary. I loved the idea of SAO, and I think it'd make a great concept for an actual game, but I found the series itself to be kind of shit. I dunno, it got weird at points with two like 15 year olds "parenting" a youngun. We'll see how this shit goes. If it's based loosely off of the anime, then maybe it'll be okay.

I just hope there's some customization to it. I want to be able to create my own character, not play as one of the characters from the series. Give an original plot and customization, just set in the familiar SAO world.
