SaSS- Well, June's not over yet, or is it? Here's my entry for Spin a Summer Story, and I hope you all enjoy!~
I felt like making a TOS: Dawn of the New World fanfic, so I should explain some things before the story begins. Richter's a half-elf, and in the game, half elves, are mistreated. (Humans also fear half elves due to Desians, a organization that harms humans, or so they think.) He works in a laboratory with a human named Aster, and go on a quest to meet a big spirit. Aqua's a spirit that they have, but she's only mentioned, not really there, and she hates deserts. Here's a link to what they look like.[X][X]
    Simple enough, right?
    ---
"Why is it so hot?" A man with an ahoge, and blond hair sighed and looked like he was about to cry. The man was skinny to the bone, and wearing a lab-coat of some sort should be in a lab, not a dessert. So why was the man there?
The Triet dessert was going no-where, and all there was to see was sand. And more, and more sand. Was there any ruin that they were supposed to find in sight? At this rate, probably not.
"Stop complaining." A man who was wearing twice as much as him didn't look like he was dropping a sweat. He had long lush red hair, and seemed like he was dragging the boy through the dessert.
"But R-Richter..." Aster started tearing up, and he felt like he was about to faint. They had their last break an hour back, and according to Richter's standards, they'd reach the dessert city of Triet during night-fall, and then the Triet Ruins in a day or two. At least he'd get a proper bed to sleep in tonight, right? Well, just as long as no-one knows that Richter's a half-elf, everything would be just fine. Half elves were treated like trash, everyone knew that, and if they found out that you were friends with one, you were considered trash too.
Richter sighed, as he knew what his best friend was going to ask."You really have no courage, do you? Well, step up and be a man. Let's take a break then." He smiled at Aster, as this was very unusual. He had tons of confidence this kid would grow up quick to become a man, as he was with someone like his kind. And he wasn't scared of our kind, which was the best thing. Heck, he even thought he was one of us back in the day.
After a while of sitting down, and Aster chugging down the last sips of water that they had, they started getting back on track to Triet. Aster tried not to complain, since there was no water, and their friend Aqua hated to be summoned in the dessert, so he'd just have to bear the heat. But Aster wondered, how did Richter not complain? He's carrying twice as much as I am, and probably has the same psychical strength as I do, because we could exercise so much in our lab rooms. Was this really the strength of a half-elf?

Once Triet became of sight, it seemed like a disaster. Richter and Aster ran to Triet to see that it was recovering from a sand storm. The villagers looked like this has happened many times, and they both heard muttering about the 'Chosen of Mana' doing this. Well, whatever, let's just check into an inn and call it a day. They checked into a inn on the side of town, and Aster fell asleep in a few moments.
It was a long, cool summer night, yet something seemed amiss.
Aster woke up in the middle of the night, as if it was like something was calling him. The simple clean inn room was filled with nothingness, but something was amiss. Wait, where was Richter? Aster called for Richter. "Richter?" Where are you?"
Aster quickly ran outside, to see him staring at the moon, and helping out the town. Aster ran to Richter, and suddenly a gush of wind came, and the townspeople's faces were awe-struck. But why for, Aster thought? They only saw his ear, and no-one can tell if he's a half elf, so what's the big deal with everyone's faces?
One man with a rugged beard, who was the same inn-keeper who welcomed the two into the city, screamed "He's a Half-Elf!"
Richter's face turned into a face that looked like anger, but yet at the same time sadness. He was sick of being a half, why couldn't he born as a whole, and not something in the middle? The only reason he got out of that prison that Aster called a lab was thanks to Aster's research, and once he was done saving the world, he and Aster would explore the world, and never go to Sybak again. They'd go to Altimira or something, and everyday would be a summer to them.
Aster ran to the town, which was about to swarm Richter, and probably sentence him to death."Stop it! What did he do to you? He was just trying to help!"
The man with the rugged beard said, "He's a half elf, he can't be trusted! He'll call the desians, and they'll take everything from us! We can barely survive this summer, with all of the sandstorms and all, so why do we have to deal with them?"
" He's not part of the Desians!"
"What makes you think that? All half elves are Desians, so we'll just have to throw this man out of town."
"Fine, then I'll go too!" Aster walked out, now with Richter following the cowardly boy.
"Pssh, a human helping a half elf? This is a new one. Maybe I'm hallucinating from the summer heat."
As they left town, Richter was baffled. Aster stood up for him? But how? The kid's been too childish, and was always scared of people, so why defend him? A half-elf? He couldn't make up the words to say, but as he looked at Aster, he smiled.
After an hour of walking, they were far enough from Triet, and far enough to catch some Z's. Richter had finally figured out what he was going to say. "Aster, how'd you do that? I thought I was hallucinating from the heat."
As the cool breeze went by, Aster smiled. "Well, it was something you said Richter that came to mind, about courage, and I had to stand up for my friend."
    "What came to mind?"
Aster smiled, and didn't hesitate to say the powerful words that made him take a stand for Richter. "Well, it was about courage, and so I made a little quote out of it. It goes like this. Courage is the magic that turns dreams into reality. Courage is the true magic that helps me make friends."

I feel like, if half-elves are persecuted this much by most humans, the reaction of the villagers would have been more extreme. Like banishment to the desert without any food or water or something. Then the tension would have risen more and Aster's declaration to stay with Richter would have meant more to the reader. Though granted I don't know anything about TOS: Dawn of the New World.

It's a cute story! Pointing out the loyalty, trust and camaraderie between the two characters through thick and thin. Nice. :D

Also, there is a lot of dessert in this story. :P
