This topic itself has popped up now and then, mostly between trainers who use these sort of Pokémon, but it's rarely discussed much further. For the most part it usually only relates to Bug/Flying types, seeing as they are usually the ones with wings..but there are other who are not, like Beedrill, Volcarona, and Venomoth. Either way, most bug types have or end up with wings at some point, and none of them know Fly? Why not.

Incects IRL are often capable of lifting 5 times their own body weight, if not more, and those with wings can often carry away things that are heavier than them. Since most bug types with wings are often the size of the trainers or bigger, then carrying said trainer shouldn't be a problem, especially since bird Pokémon like Chatot and Farfecth'd (which as we all know are pint-sized) can easily learn the move. Bug Pokémon like Yanmega are described as being strong flyers, able to carry heavy loads in their legs, and other bug types are often described as being very strong.

Here's one description of Yanmega: "This six-legged Pokémon is easily capable of transporting an adult in flight. The wings on its tail help it stay balanced."

So, you have to ask, should bug types with wings be able to use Fly like every other Pokémon with wings? I think so.

Not all winged insects use their wings to fly. Pray Mantises use their wings to propel themselves from one spot to another, which is most accurate of Scyther. Also, Scizor only uses its wings to regulate its body temperature, since naturally it can't fly with its heavy carapace.

as Potatrobot said, not all bugs with wings can fly, but most insects with wings can though...

For the record, volcarona can learn fly. I use it for hatching eggs because it flies and has flame body. Other than that, I see your point there. If they make the Pokémon flying type like scyther, it should learn fly. Otherwise, just make the scyther plain bug if it won't fly.

Actually Scizor flies in the anime, and he does it quite quick too so I don't think his wings have a problem lifting him up.

Oh, I had no clue, but then again I never used Volcarona, I think it's a cool Pokémon, but my team was already full.

But yeah, I certain bugs don't fly with their wings, but most of them do, and seeing as most of them ar part Flying type they should learn Fly or else the typing wouldn't make much sense. I would like to see Beedrill and Ninjask learn it as well, even though Beedrill is poison type it still flys with it's wings and is often seen carrying heavy objects/people/Pokémon in it's arms.

Maybe some should learn fly if they are physically big enough, but I don't think it would fit with all of them, or even most of them. There are other part flying types that can't learn Fly either, such as Mantine or Gligar and Gliscor, Emolga, entire Hoppip line, even Chatot which is a small bird where Pidgey, also being a small bird, can learn it. Sometimes the flying type really is just a secondary aspect of a Pokémon.

If Scizor flies in the anime then I'd like a meeting to take place within the Pokémon team to discuss what abilities which Pokémon have so they can get it straight, and establish the same facts between anime and the games. The Pokédex entry for Scizor clearly states that its wings aren't used for flying.

Why can Pidgey Fly but Scyther can't?
And i'm very frustrated with Mantine not being able to Fly, It IS part flying and has HUGE wings.

This is a really great topic. I think they should be able to fly. If a small pidgey can learn fly, and bug should be able to.

Agreed, Mantine should learn Fly, and as a matter of fact, any Pokémon that is part Flying type should learn Fly too, I mean, it's in their type..Flying. If they didn't want all flying types to learn fly they should've called them Wind types or something like that.

I cannot see how Doduo/dodrio can use fly. However, they actually can. Wtf, gamefreak?

Physically big/strong enough. Here are some examples of bug/flying types too weak to/incapable of carry(ing) a person:
    Butterfree
Scyther (it's like two-three feet tall and has scythes for arms. that's dangerous)
    Ledyba
    Ledian
    Beautifly
    Masquerain
    Ninjask
    Mothim

They could fly by themselves, but they can't carry a human. I don't agree with Pidgey being able to learn Fly for the same reason.

Well, I've checked it, and it seems only Dodrio can learn Fly, but not Doduo...however, I do agree, how? They have no wings, and Dodrio only has tail-feathers.

Actually, if I've done my research correctly..butterflies, mantis', layybugs, cicadas, and moths are all able to lift things that are often 3-7 times their body weight, depending on the age of the insect and how much damage it has taken in it's life. If that is correct of RL insects, then so should it be of Pokémon. Which means Butterfree, Scyther (with the understanding that the sharpness is only on one side of thier blades, and the fact that Scyther is actually 4-5 feet, and most of the trainers in the game are at an age where they are smaller than that), Ledyba, Ledian, Beautifly, Ninjask, and Mothim should have the capability to lift their trainers while flying. Masquerain is understandable, having no other limbs than it's wings, but one thing has been noticed about the worled f Pokémon, everyone often has the right supplies when on a journey, meaning that the Pokémon itself needs nothing but wings, because with a rope (everyone knows to bring rope) you can tie it around the Pokémon and be lifted off, as seen in the anime. Which brings me to this very well noted quote:

Both the Gamnes and the anime should reflect each other, atleast as far as dynamics and physics go. The two need to match up just enough that one would not get confused when seeing a Pokémon doing something that it cannot in the game. It's the same way if you were to see something in real life, if it is capable for one person, it should atleast be possible for another. For Pokémon, we know their world is all about equality, so if anyone has the upper-hand in any point, it's because they trained to be better, and not because they were unequally able to do something.

Which is why I believe, that if bugs are so strong in our world, even though they are small, they should be equally as strong in their Pokémon forms, meaning that the features should be multiplied to specifically match each Pokémon's design to where it came from. If a Moth can carry off a worm that's 2 times it's size and 3 times it's weight, then Mothim should have no problem doing the same.

That, I'm afraid, is where you are terribly wrong.

Insects in our world are small for a very specific reason: they're not strong enough to be large. If you got, say, a pray mantis to become the size of a human, it wouldn't be able to hold itself up, and this is taking into consideration that their muscles would also have grown. It simply doesn't work like that. The muscles of insects can only support a creature as small as they are now, and can only carry out tasks such as lifting other objects close to their size. The ratio of sizes and mass have nothing to do with their capabilities, a moth can only carry the aforementioned worm because no matter how many times larger it is than the moth, it is still very small and light.

So maybe bug types in the Pokémon world already struggle with their own weight, so they can't carry anything else. Maybe Gamefreak is a step ahead.

And espeonbird, like I said before, Scyther is a pray mantis. Those don't use their wings to fly, but to dart from one place to another. Scizor may be different, apparently, but it also has massive claws and it warrants a steel type so that's Pokémon for you.

Actually, according to studies about incects from the time of the dinosaurs, you would very much be wrong about the case of their strength. You see, the way something works, is that what ever size it is or becomes, all of it's traits multiply oir divide to match up with it's structure. Incects were once larger than even Humans at times, and could carry out the same tasks as they still do today, the only difference in todays world is that they are smaller, meaning their cpabilities have been divded to fit their size. The muscles of incects often work alot like hydraulics, and because they don't have an inner skeleton, the outer shell known as the exoskeleton has less limitations, and so the musles themselves have more room to be used. A single ant can lift 10 times it's own body weight, and that itself would not change if it were to grow. The wings of an incect would work in the same way, if a bird is much larger, say as big as a plane, that bird's wingspan would have to have grown out to an equally multiplied size to give it lift. Since Bug Pokémon are often just larger versions of what they represent, so should all of thier capabilities be far greater, and it is why there are able to do what they do in battle already.

If you were to grow to lets say 10 feet tall, you wouldn't get weaker for it would you? No, because if you were to grow to that height your body would also ensure that the Mass of your body would change to fit your new height, o not only would you expand up, but also out, enough to make your strength equal to a multiplied state of what it was before.

People tend to forget that Bugs were at a point a very large and dominant species on this planet, and only see them for their weakened state as they are now, not realized the strengths and feats they accomplish on a day to day basis. Incects, and other creatures, are reduced in their size to what they are so that mankind would have this change to exist without harm from them, had bugs not evolved to smaller sizes we all could be in a very different world.

And to a point you are somewhat correct, but mantis' do fly in one aspect, not far, often more seen as a hop, but if you watched them you'd notice that they use their wings to propel them through the air to get more height and distance, allowing them to leap atleast between 4-8 feet. In a way, I'd almost consider that as flying. And as was noted in the anime, Both Scyther and Scizor have been seen flying through the air, and at times have been seen carrying their trainer. It's not known exactly how far and high they flew, but considering the move Fly itself doesn't say exactly how high or for how long, any Pokémon with wings and enough strength to carry the trainer could intiatially Hop their way through the air to the destination. As for scizor's steel typing, not all steel is heavy, and what i mention about Scizor's coating is basically that, just a thin coat of light metal, meaning it wouldn't feel heavy to itslef, but might feel somewhat heavy if you tried to lift it.

Very interesting point, and although it's in direct opposition to what I read about arthropods while doing some research on them, a constant BMI does sound plausible.

I'd love to see a giant pray mantis myself, if it wasn't obvious enough that I'm obsessed with them, they'd make great steeds, and nobody would mess with you. Unless they were riding a giant spider.

And what you've said about how prey mantises move rings true about what I said; they just use their wings to give themselves a boost, but that still isn't sustained flight, and a human sized one still wouldn't be able to hop over two cities.

I think when its a big bug type with wings than they should be able to learn it.
I'm sure if they could learn it much more trainers will use them.

I also believe Bug types with wings should be able to use fly, My main concern would be the size of the bug type and their wing span
