So like I said in my hello thread, I haven't played a Pokémon game since SoulSilver, not including AlphaSapphire like I'm doing right now. I skipped over Gen V entirely, plus XY. I think I'm going to wait for Z (hopefully not X2Y2) to catch up with main Gen VI, but I do want to bring my Gen 3-4 pokes up to speed with Gen VI and beyond, which necessitates something in Gen V.

So I'm wondering, should I get a BW game, or a B2W2? If I recall when I was buying Alpha Sapphire, BW were still about $40 and B2W2 were more like $25 or $30, but aside from the price, is there one I should definitely prefer over the other? More of a storyline, more legendaries, more post-game, anything like that? My main concern is importing my GBA and DS pokes to 3DS, so these other factors are secondary, admittedly, but I do want the biggest bang for my game-buying buck.

I have no idea, but personally I would buy Black 2 and White 2 over the originals. Whilst you might be a bit confused about some story elements, you can easily google it. BW2 have so much more content in them compared to B/W, and overall will keep you playing for at least a month. Well worth it, make sure to get them when you can.

I would recommend getting a BW2 game, the sequels are honestly just seem better imo. There just seem to be more to do and the story is BW2 is better.

I prefer black/white over their sequels. But @[member="Achromatic"] is right, there is more extra stuff in B2/W2. But B/W is also worth the money because of it's story. It's one thing to read it on google than to actually play it for yourself.
My recommendation is to get both of them, the order doesn't matter I suppose. You could get B/W at a later date, but don't dismiss it entirely.

IMO BW2 is a better run for your munny. The main reasons are:
    • BW2 gives you access to almost all the Unova Pokémon as well as ones from earlier generations from the start, and much more interesting ones.
    • BW2 has Hidden Grottoes, the Pokémon there have a chance to have their Hidden Ability, which is awesome.
    • In BW, the only endgame facility is the Battle Subway, the equivalent of the Battle Tower. BW2 has the Pokémon World Tournament and offers many more fun challenges.
    • Although I've never explored it to it's full potential, Join Avenue can give you sweet items and other bonuses and is more reason to throw the hours away in the game.
All in all, it's your choice though.

I prefer Black and White plot wise, but if you're doing it for the Pokémon get 2. You can survive if you didn't play Black and White 2, it's more of a seeing every charterer again sequel.

Thanks for the play-by-play, Derahex, that's a really good way to break it down to bitesize pieces for me, just what I needed.

So it sounds like the original BW has more story, fewer Pokémon, and fewer features (like the battle subway thing); while the sequels have less story, but more Pokémon and features. To me, the story has always been frosting on the cake to the adventure and battling, and I eat a cake for the, uh, cake part. A major concern of mine was how disconnected the sequels were from the originals, whether or not I would be completely lost in the chain of events. For instance (separate topic but) I asked a pal of mine if I could jump right into Bioshock Infinite without playing the prequels, but he went off the hook with fanboy hype telling me I just had to play the whole series no matter what. I don't know the accuracy of that answer, but you all make it sound like going straight to B2W2 is like 85% okay, which is good enough percentage for me.

I recommend BW for the story, the freshness feel, and the atmosphere.

I recommend BW2 for the extended gameplay and legendaries.

Both the games are great, and you should definitely buy them both if you get the chance! Personally, I slightly prefer BW over BW2.

BW will make BW2 a whole lot more special, but BW2 is definitely the better game imo. The game has so many things to do in it, you'll find yourself overwhelmed. The game is beautiful and you should seriously consider getting it.

Both are good for their own reasons...

    B/W: For Cilan
    B2/W2: For Colress

    .... Don't judge me!
