A nifty trick for making your focal (main image/render) stand out is to create 2-4 copies of the render layer and apply the gaussian blur and/or motion blur effects. The copies must be behind the main render layer in order to achieve this nice effect however. Try to make your gaussian blur anywhere between 2-6 points and your motion blur 2-4. Also, don't be afraid to use various c4ds, fractals etc. in your tags. They can greatly improve and give depth to a tag. Just make sure that they don't obscure your render too much (a few slightly overlapping your render is good). Defining a light source is also and important step. Like Bubbles said, using and learning from tutorials will help you as you go along. Other than that, you can only get better from here!
