Well, the first trailer just dropped, as you can see. Anyone got any thoughts they'd like to share? Are your senses reeling in horror, or are you perhaps a little more hopeful that the movie might not turn out to be complete garbage after all? Whilst Sonic looks horrific, I applaud the casting of Jim Carrey as Robotnik - this is a role he was absolutely meant to play. And you know what? I think I'm becoming densensitised to my childhood favourites being rendered in nightmare fuel realism, because after Detective Pikachu, Dumbo, The Lion King, and Will Smith's Genie in Aladdin, I'm not shocked by anything.
I'm not a big Sonic fan, but I think that the movie has some potential. It isn't a really serious movie which is Pretty good, because I think that a movie based on "kids" videogame can't be 100% serious. As much as I love Jim Carrey, I don't think that he is really fitting for Robotnik (physical). In my opinion Robotnik should be played by a more "fat" actor.
Although I definitely won't see this movie in theaters, I can't help but feel that Jim Carrey was born for a role such as this. Robotnik is intentionally an exaggerated villain in many ways, and that just fits him, imo. I don't think the movie will be that great, but it may be worth a rental some day.
Sonics design is just... WHY? Why does he look like a child in a fursuit, why isn't he wearing gloves, and most importantly why does he have freaky human teeth and lips? He seriously gives me uncanny valley vibes. Yikes The movie itself looks boring and reminds me way too much of those awful live action movies of the late 2000s/early 10s (Smurfs, Hop, Alvin and the Chipmunks, etc). The CGI looks cheap too. I guess Jim Carrey is kind of fitting as eggman, so that's something positive.
I'm not a big sonic fan, but I have to say that sonic deserves more love than this. Yes the casting for Robotnik is a good one, but the fact that they made this a live action is its greatest downfall. Trying to put animated characters in live action has never worked out for movies and the only one who might pull it off is Pokémon just because of how much money their throwing at it (Have you seen the CG in that! It looks like each Pokémon was ten million dollars each). I honestly couldn't say more about the movie until I watch it other than I have low expectations. On a side note, has anyone noticed that a lot more movies recently are based in our world rather than fantasy worlds?
Sonic’s design unnerves me in ways I can’t put into words... why does he have teeth? Anyway, I’m not too big a Sonic fan, so I’m not dedicated to watching it. It’s got some potential I guess, but that’s mostly because of Jim Carrey. On the plus side, I heard that Sonic is being redesigned, so he might look less like nightmare fuel.
I'm not a Sonic fan, but OH GOD THAT THING LOOKS HORRIBLE. I might end up just watching it for the memes because... memes.
On the plus side, they’re pushing back the premiere date back until February 2020 to reanimate Sonic, so that’s good.
I'll probably never watch it, but I'm interested to see what the redesign will look like. A part of me is hoping it ends up being even worse, or there ends up being weird animation glitches like in Sonic Boom as a result of redoing it. Or if they just forget to switch out the models in some places so you have that jarring monstrosity jumpscaring people in places. That would be amazing.
After getting lured into so many bad live action adaptations of animated franchises, I don’t feel like giving this movie a shot. Unless it ends up being a decent movie. The delay could help with the movie’s quality, but I’m not holding my breath.
