One of the most interesting and fun features of Super Smash Bros. 4 is the ability to unlock custom moves for your fighters. Custom moves bring a lot of variety to battles, as you never know what to expect. One of the problems with Custom Moves however, is that they can prove to be very hard to obtain. As a result, I've decided to compile a list of the best ways to unlock custom moves extremely quickly.

Before I start this list, I should mention that there are a handful of custom moves that MUST be obtained by completing certain challenges in the games. These custom moves differ depending on if you are playing the 3DS version or the Wii U version. The following is is a list of custom moves that must be unlocked by completing challenges.

Moves Unlocked by Completing Challenges (3DS Version)
Exploding Popgun (Diddy Kong) - Destroy 3000 blocks in Trophy Rush
Close Combat (Ike) - Destroy 1000 blocks in Trophy Rush
Effortless Blade (Marth) - Clear 100-Man Smash within 3 minutes
Explosive Punch (Mario) - Score 200000 or more in Target Blast
Giant Bomb (Link) - Destroy 300 blocks in Trophy Rush
High-Speed Drill (Meta Knight) - Win 5 Smash battles with Meta Knight
Huge Header (Wii Fit Trainer) - Get a max combo of 10 or more in Training
Lightning Falcon Kick (Captain Falcon) - Play StreetSmash for the first time
Liftoff Lloid (Villager) - Battle 2 or more times on the Tortimer Island stage in Smash

Moves Unlocked by Completing Challenges (Wii U Version)
Accele-Reflector (Falco) - Get a chain of at least 150 in Trophy Rush while playing alone and as Falco
Dashing Assault (Lucina) - Clear the -The Falchion's Seal- event on normal difficulty or higher
Dire Hydrant (Pac-Man) - Score at least 200000 points in a single game of Target Blast on Stage 2
Control Arrow / Guiding Bow (Dark Pit) - Get a score of 25 or more in a single Rival Smash while playing as Dark Pit
Ripping Boomerang (Link) - Play as Link and score 50 KOs or more in Solo Endless Smash
Rock Hurl (Charizard) - Play as Charizard and get a score of 100m (328 ft.) or more in Solo Home-Run Contest without using the bat
Tornado Hold (Mega Man) - Clear a Master Orders ticket while playing as Mega Man
Exploding Popgun (Diddy Kong) - Score at least 150000 points in a single game of Target Blast on Stage 1

Now that we have gone over that, let's talk about the best methods to unlock custom moves.

    Method I: Roulette Exploit
Go into Classic Mode. It does not matter who you select. When on the stage intro screen (with the roulette) press the Home button during the middle of the roulette. If the screen shows you're about to land on a custom move (symbolized as a red wrench icon on the roulette), go back into the game and mash A. Otherwise, hit Home again and try again. Repeat until you have all of your desired custom moves. You can get repeats and equipment this way as well.

Method II: Smash Run (3DS Version Only)
This method only works on the 3DS Version, since the Wii U Version of Smash 4 does not have the Smash Run game mode. When in Smash Run, you can find Custom Moves as bag items with a yellow wrench on them. Only pick up these and nothing else. Then win or lose the fight at the end of Smash Run to keep the moves. You can get repeats and equipment this way as well. Repeat until you have all of the custom moves you desire.

I hope that this tutorial was of some help to you!

I just spent the past hour or so doing Smash Run over and over again trying to work my way toward getting EVERYONE's custom moves (little by little). I must admit, pausing the reward roulette with Home seems pretty genius. I'm usually good at videogame roulettes too, but something about Smash's makes my eyes, brain, and/or hand never predict it right. I'm going to go try that out next time I flip open the game. Thanks!

This was a really helpful tutorial! Usually I would just collect everything I found in Smash Run, so knowing that collecting only the bags has helped me speed up the process even more. I also noticed that if you set your opponents as the same character as yourself in smash run (ex: You are jigglypuff and cpu1 2 and 3 are jigglypuff) you have an even higher chance of getting custom moves for that character!

I've noticed that same-character pattern too, but there is a downside to grabbing everything: You only get to keep your most recent 10 or 12 items (shown at the top of the bottom screen). What I do now is after I've collected a single bag item of any kind, I don't grab any more coin stacks past that point, so I can get that maximum 10 or 12 items, instead of half as many items and a bunch of (nearly) useless coins.
