@Sugar There was already a line of girls waiting to audition. Luckily, the elder's daughter wasn't just sitting in a Hydreigon's lair the whole show--she was rescued in Act 2 and had an important part in the rest of the show.
Sophie looked over at all the other auditionees. She could probably do better than all of them put together, in her mind at least. In reality, she'd probably get the role anyway, but just barely. In any case, she was going to give it her best.
@Sugar "Next!" the audition crew called as the previous auditionee departed. That meant it was Sophie's turn. Auditionees had to read part of the rescue scene with Ash and Dawn, and then read part of the Kitsune scene with Serena and Dawn.
Sophie began to remember everything she was told about acting as a child as she stepped in. She was going to act her heart out. All she needed was her confidence and everything else would come naturally.
"Okay..." the attendant began. "In this scene, Touya, the hero, and Kanade have infiltrated the Hydreigon's lair during the night in an attempt to rescue Ren--your role. They believe Ren has a role to play in defeating her captor. You want to convey a little excitement--as you have been rescued, but some confusion too."
Working without her script, Sophie did some of the best acting of her life. She practically hit the nail on the head with every line she said, everything was nearly perfect. Considering she had never auditioned for an acting role before, she was doing fantastically for herself.
@Sugar (I'll leave what the script said a surprise for now--you'll see what it said as we rehearse and perform the show)
@Sugar A few days later, word spread through the living quarters that the parts had been posted. Many of the newcomers would be taking part in an act, but there were some that got to say lines.
The parts were naturally posted in the audition room. Since everyone else was probably headed over that way, she decided to go as well. Sophie weaved through the crowd and up to the audition postings. Right under Ash, Misty, Brock, Serena, and a few others, she saw her name. She had gotten the part.
@Sugar Ash was playing Touya, the hero--he had a long list of heroic roles to his credit, and this one was no exception. Misty was playing Undine, the spirit of water that guarded the village in the story. Brock was narrating the story--everyone know that it would be filed with colorful commentary and asides as well as music. Serena was playing Kitsune, the holy Delphox. In this story she guides Kanade, Touya, and Ren towards the Hydreigon's lair. Dawn was of course, playing Kanade. Not only did she look accurate, she had the needed stage archery and martial arts skills to boot.
Sophie ran her finger past her name and read on. "Ren - Elder's Daughter" It read next to her name. How exciting, in a matter of less than a week, Sophie had gone from newcomer to actor just like that. She still had a lot of work to do however.
@Sugar Every one of the main roles--Sophie included--also had an understudy. They would be learning the same lines as their counterparts, but if an act was called for in the script, they could use one of their own skills, or learn something their counterpart did.
Sophie wondered who her understudy would be. Although, at her age, she wouldn't have thought she needed one for an acting role. Nonetheless, she kept reading along, looking under the understudy column. Clearly, she'd have no idea who it would be, but would be more than excited to meet them if she had the chance to.
@Sugar (for consistency's sake, male roles get male understudies, and female roles get female understudies)
@Sugar "Show readthrough in a few minutes!" Brock called to the excited performers. Even though some of them would only be performing an act, every participant was required to be at a readthrough.
Sophie tapped her foot as she waited for directions on where to go for the readthrough, if anywhere at all. This should be relatively interesting.
