Stupid rumors we believed as a kid

Spamming A and B was what they told me, it of course does nothing.

I also once met these random guys that tried to make me and my brother believe the most crazy rumors they got come up with xD Like their cousin catching a ultra rare golden unown.

 

I believed for the longest time that holding B+Up+Select would guarantee a catch. I still find myself holding B+Up out of habit sometimes, but I read it on those "cheat" sites when I was little and would just keep thinking, "Maybe the next one will turn it into 100%!"

Obviously, after enough Pokeballs, something would be caught, so I just kept believing that until I learned about RNG & percentages and all that fun stuff that ripped apart my young, hopeful reality.

 

I used to think that if you delayed a Pokémon's evolution it would be stronger stat-wise since Ash's pikachu seems to destroy everything, but alas it is not the case.

 

I always thought that evolved Pokémon needed more experience to level up than their younger forms did, but most of them are in the same experience brackets.

Also I learned that jamming all four of the buttons on the arrow pad in a counterclockwise direction and rolling my thumb over a+b would somehow influence the game into giving me a higher chance of catching my target, but alas, my dreams have been ruined as well.

 

Someone convinced me I needed to save after beating Legendaries.

 

Someone told me if you keep hitting the a button you could do more damage to a Pokémon.

 

Ah, I was a victim of the various button combinations as well...

Not exactly a rumor, but when I was a lot younger I was deathly afraid of the GTS when I was little because of some Pokepasta I had read. I was worried I'd get a glitched Pokémon that would wipe my game.

I remember believing some stupid shiny rumor too, don't remember what it was though.

 

A particularly exotic one in my case:

Emerald version. My second game in the series (the other being Sapphire). At some point, I became convinced that, by doing some specific thing, the Mossdeep Space Center would launch me into space, where I could catch Deoxys. I will not say how much time I wasted on this.

 

I was convinced about the button combo thing...

Though all I was told is pressing B right as the Pokéball hits will increase catch rate. I still do this sometimes, out of old habits.

• Any of the button mashing "tips" for catching Pokémon. Unfortunately, it's become so routine I still do them to this day.
• Naming yourself after one of the three legendary birds in RGB affected how many starters you could pick. (I should've figured out it wasn't real since Articuno can't even fit into the number of spaces provided for the character name, but I think my reasoning for that was I'd get one Pokémon if I went by any other name, so.)
• Breeding Plusle and Minun got "Minusle".
• Similarly, breeding Jirachi and Deoxys got "Jiroxys" or something like that.

I think there are quite a few others I believed (namely RGB ones) but I can't recall them at the moment.

 

A kid that I knew when I was 9 convinced me that if you rose a Crobat to a specific level then it would change color, something like green or brown. I didn't level up my Crobat that much cause I wanted to keep my purple Crobat. -u-;
Also, something that I do now is that pressing A or Y, depending on what direction the Pokéball twitches would raise the chances of catching a Pokémon.

 

One of my friends told me that if you caught every single Unown letter in the Sevii islands, Entei would randomly appear in the wild. Obviously this never happened, but I did eventually figure out that you find one of the legendary dogs randomly post game depending on what starter you chose. I still can't believe I took the time to catch all of those Unown and organize them alphabetically in my PC hoping that I would eventually find Entei. :cry:

 

Button combinations have ensnared lots of people here I see, including myself haha. I used to think that hitting the right button at the right moment, such as B when throwing the Pokéball and down while the Pokéball has landed on the ground after sucking the Pokémon in, etc. etc. If I'm not playing on an emulator, I tend to still do it out of habit.

 

I never really believed any of the rumors, but I'm still pressing all the buttons whenever I try to catch a Pokémon xD

 

When i was little and started to be a newbie there was a rumor that if you stopped Pokémon from evolving you kill it i always believed on that so i was scared to not let my Pokémon evolved ​

 

I was told that hitting L+R+Start+Select would give me a 100% chance to catch Pokémon. That belief lasted about two minutes.

 

Here's a rumor I believed for a long time: Phillip Bartlett (the English dub voice of Mewtwo in the first movie) died shortly after the first movie premiered.

That rumor was only recently disproved. Now the mystery is why and how that rumor was even started.

 

I too believed in the random button mashing increasing your chances to catch things. I remember sitting at recess and watching a friend play Gold or Silver version, and he was like, known as the school's Pokémon Master... he kept doing all these crazy button combinations while trying to catch the Red Gyarados, and he got it pretty easily, back then I was pretty much convinced that that "proved" the rumor, haha. Silly me ;3
