So, Super Mystery Dungeon was released in Japan the other day and just out of curiosity (and hope that it's nothing like GoI) I wanted to look at what Serebii had to say about it in terms of gameplay and the like.

So, first of all, hunger meter is back. That's a great sigh of relief to me. I realise that was a very likely recurring feature, but it wasn't in GoI and it was one of the tense parts of the games when you didn't have enough apples.

Also, there seems to be throwbacks to the old games, with unlockable music from old games and recurring items, as well as some cameos from other game's teams. Albeit so far kinda obscure teams like Team Charm and Team ACT but who knows, Wigglytuff's guild could show up or something.

Now the worrying stuff. So far they have found you can ONLY recruit by doing missions for certain Pokémon. They've only been at the game for two days, but so far only after missions do they recruit Pokémon. That's honestly worrying me, because I loved the stress of going into the dungeon and trying to recruit a certain Pokémon and finally the satisfaction when they ask if they can join your team. It was great.

Also, this limit may be changed, but you can only have 3 Pokémon on your team at one time. This bugs me because you are likely going to be you and your partner through the majority of the story, and so only one other Pokémon can round out the team. I feel like that's going to be a weird restriction, and I really hope it's not for the Hoopa gimmick that summons a random (I assume) legendary to either fight for or against you. If they have reduced the party size for THAT, I'll be mad.

So what do you think about these and anything else that people have found about the game so far?

I have watched some Let's Play thanks to somebody getting Super Mystery Dungeon quite early, and I have mixed feelings about this, when watching the playthrough and when seeing the info from several sites.

    1. First, it's the limit of bringing 3 Pokémon instead of 4, since personally I enjoy it a lot more when I bring 4 from my team when going into the dungeon, and I suspect that one of the reason that you can only bring 3 is because you have to make room for the Pokémon that asked the help request to fill in with the 4th spot (if you're on escort mission of some sort) or when you summon the Legendary Pokémon, judging from one of the trailers, and it might have 5 slots of customized teams.

    2. I find the beginning of the game might be pretty creepy at some point, and I'm not quite fond of it. Thankfully a certain Nuzleaf is able to help the playable character and gives the tutorial in case you're still new at PMD series.

    3. I like the fact that I can ignore the Personality Test results and opted to choose different Pokémon that you want instead, which may be good for those who want to pick Pokémon that they want to be, and the same applies to your partner as well.

    4. So, the sections of this game are divided into Chapters, eh? It's a minor thing, but I think it'll make it easier to know what to do in the game.

Hngh... It's not like GoI where you get legendaries handed to you, but you get a Bisharp on your team at Normal Rank... And I'm assuming you get legendaries for certain if you beat them at the end of a dungeon... I honestly don't want that. I want to have to repeat dungeons multiple times to finally get the legendary. I realise that sounds counter intuitive, but I think they've missed the thrill of the recruiting mechanics from other games.

And I still have a problem with that 3 Pokémon rather than four thing, with the fourth reserved as an escort slot. I don't like it. After all the hype over this game's trailers being promising, I'm actually disappointed already...
