I think this is quite an interesting topic, because almost everyone does it, but it's generally bad behavior. I've heard things about American TV being heavily censored with swearwords for some reason, but I could be wrong about that. Here, most of the programs are uncensored (including national channels), which might have an influence on how insensitive people here are to swearing. At least, almost all the Dutch people I've met. When you're having with your dinner with your family, friends it's not uncommon to use the occasional swearword and no one really gets offended by it. In class at school teachers sometimes use expletives. There's no real difference between male or female when it comes to cussing I've noticed. Both genders seem to do it just as much, though girls are often more discrete about it.
Honestly I swear way too much myself, even when there's no reason to do so. I just find incredibly satisfying to use a lot profanity, I guess. Then again, I'd say I'm a rather vulgar person, but oh well. Also, the Dutch languages has some of the best swearwords, in my opinion. English not so much, but the F-word and its varieties are fun to say, so it's not all bad. Hmmm, hopefully I won't get banned for a thread like this
What is your opinion on swearing? How does your environment react to swearing? Is it accepted, tolerated, feared, disgusted? I'm curious :3

Sri Lanka is an extremely traditionally cultured country. So much so that I remember when I was smaller, they used to censor kissing on TV. Seriously, it was that bad.

That said, my generation loves these words. I can't deny that I use swear word a lot. I swear every other sentence, I've been told. I have hope for the future of my country, I do.

As for on-line, I never swear on the Internet. Swearing in real life is easy, it just slips out but when I type it out, it just seems weird and inappropriate. I don't really mind others swearing at all though. In fact, I don't even mind being sworn at. I'd just rather have a witty comeback than a drug-addled gangster one. xD

I do swear quite a bit in person, but hardly much online. i think swearing is a thing which comes with age? Because I'm an example of it. When I was younger I used to wonder why older people around me used to swear so much, I didn't like it, at all. But when I entered high-school it slowly grew on me and I no longer found it as offensive.

Of course I'm not the only one who was like this, the senior group this year got in trouble this year just because we were heard swearing by the year-7s, they didn't like so they complained to the teachers. (this is what happens when you decrease the age of students entering high-school >_>) Those students should just wait, in a few years time they'll be the one who will find it acceptable to swear, I think it just goes to show that swearing doesn't really become much of an issue as you grow older.

Here in the US, at least where I am, swearing isn't really considered a bad thing and I've heard it plenty of times at family gatherings and by teachers. And especially by coaches :P

And I do it, too. Ocassionally...

I probably swear waaaayyy too much. I blame my friends and my books. Personally, I don't mind when other people swear, not really.

The only swear that bothers me is "bitch". The definition of that word is "a female dog", and it has become a derogatory word(due to, likely, the behavior of a female dog in heat), but I like dogs, they're a lot better than humans sometimes

But honestly? Swearing is a part of life. Vsauce did a nice video on it a while ago, and as they say, there has always been the "taboo" words

I try not to swear, but I slip up every now and then. My family cusses their fair share, but it's shocking to hear your then five year old brother drop the F-bomb like it's nothing.
When I'm writing I'll drop cuss words in, if it's in character for the character to say it, with the only expection being the F-bomb as I won't ever use that.

I grew up in the southern part of America. Kids cussing are frowned upon but no one really cares about teens and adults.

You're trying to poll people's opinions on swearing with a forum discussion topic? That's not how it works, you ass

Joking aside, I have noticed two very prominent things about myself in this regard: first, that when alone I am frustrated by small things and am prone to swearing when that happens; and second, that when around other people, both the swearing and the frustration drop to zero.

I thus consider myself to have a very strong mental filter. When I know that no one is around I will have little qualms about cussing (at myself, for my own stupidity), but when around others I will respect them by not using such coarse language. I don't know their opinions on the language, but more importantly, I don't want others nearby to hear anything foul that comes from my mouth. This is especially true when I'm around children (which, lately, has been occurring more often), enough to the point where I actually have to change my speech patterns to something more simplistic. (You've seen how I talk eloquently here on this forum? I do that in real life too.)

I also don't consider self-censorship to be a bad habit either. Why would it be? Others' opinions of me may be discoloured by my choice of words (no pun intended), and I'd rather others remember me for my diverse vocabulary, not my coarse one.

    Imeannnnwut?

The british kinda swear within reason. Its heavily censored within watershed (morning 'till 9 O'Clock) and then its gradually introduced on TV.

Adults are kinda meh about it but they despise anyone younger then them doing it. And by that they mean anyone up to ONE YEAR YOUNGER.

But I think its fine, swearing is needed for comedic value and its a pert of our language, we might as well use it!

I try not to swear much at all, and when I do, it's to convey a very specific message. In a recent answer in my AMA, I was describing an event in a certain videogame where a bad guy is almost defeated then flees before the final blow. I had options: "Tucked his tail between his legs and ran" "got the heck out of there" "ran away like a little bitch". Only that last one really got the exact message (and I even apologized for the word choice in-line, and reinforced that it was still the most accurate description). It's a similar thing to why some in instances "what the hell" and "what the fuck" can better convey similar-but-different messages. F is angry or comedic, H is serious or concerned. My friend does something stupid and gets into a car accident, and it's her fault? I calmly asked "why the hell did you do that?" If I used F instead, it would sound more belittling, berating, or angry; when I was just overwhelmed with needing to convey the seriousness of the situation.

*shudder*. I feel nasty just typing this response. Like I said, I generally keep a clean mouth except under very specific and very rare situations.

I tend to swear A LOT in real life. Of course, it doesn't help that I'm American and have been surrounded by people who curse a lot (thanks a lot, Dad...).

However, I rarely curse online because I know that there are people who can't stand others who swear like sailors (ie: myself). I respect other's opinions and refrain from cursing as much as possible, unless if I'm telling a joke.

    That's partly true!

Are we the only ones who dislike swearing? I think swearing is a terrible, inappropriate thing. I've never sworn before, and so hasn't my sister. I'm very sensitive to swearing, I don't feel good whenever I hear it. There is no point to swearing, but I wonder why people do it.

It helps to put emphasis on things, though that emphasis is dying because of how common swearing is becoming.

I swear ALOT. However, these sears are not in person, as I do not want to be dirty mouthed in person. However, I do swear alot at school, and I swore at a schoolmate of mine (2) because of something. I swear when I get angry,as I pushed someone for saying that Honor Rolls are just a piece of "Shit" posted onto a wall. My school does not tolerate this at school though
Well, its kinda confusing, but swearing can't be controlled.

Growing up, the culture around me regarded swearing as a pretty bad thing, and something you'd best not do you you'll be judged as a bad person. I went to a private christian school so of course swearing was not allowed in school and if you did swear there would be punishment. And so, all the kids swore outside of school with their friends and had to put on magical censors around their parents and teachers. Give no reason as to why you shouldn't swear and people aren't going to listen, simply.

As for myself, I've always been very quiet and have kept careful control of whatever words come out of my mouth, beyond swearing. Being raised in this culture, I haven't been one to let any swear words slip out of my mouth. It may have started as an unexplained habit, but I'm glad now to keep my language cleaner. Its a matter of respect, really. There's just no need to say such nasty things about other people. I have a bigger problem with swear words directed at people rather than at unfortunate accidents. Topics like damnation just aren't our business, its not one person's place to tell another to go to hell. If you believe in that sort of thing at least. If not, then I care a little less. Shouldn't be holding you to my standards.

I agree with @[member="Doomhound"]'s post, mainly since I was also raised that way.

To add to my own post, I have a bad reaction to swearing, and if I see/hear it, I feel sick and a little upset, but that's just me.

Personally, I try to avoid swearing too much, as it just makes you sound like a bit of a cretin when you do it all the time.

But when I'm playing frustrating video games and stuff I curse like a sailor.

People swear a LOT here. Usually the c-word. (I've heard that people don't use it much in some countries, but tbh I don't have many qualms about using it with regular swears because it's such a common word I hear.) A lot of people do it to sound cool, at least that's what I think, and it annoys me.

So, basically, I'm cool with swearing as long as the words you say aren't outright offensive and you don't do it too much. People who act like swearing at all makes you evil are really annoying too.

Before anything, I'd like to say this: my post will contain multiple swears, so read at your own discretion.

Clearly I don't mean to offend anyone when I say this, but I usually find it pretty funny when someone dislikes swearing. I understand 100% if you personally don't say them yourself, but to be offended or annoyed by them if they're not directed towards you is just funny to me. Why should you care about what comes out of other people's mouths? Worry about your life and they'll worry about their own. :P

My history with swearing goes back pretty far. I first started saying them when I was about 7 or 8 years old, believe it or not. In the apartment complex I used to live in, there were a whole bunch of kids who used to play games and hang out together, with myself being included in that bunch. A few of them were older than I was, and they used to swear a lot. At first I didn't really think much of it, but then one day, I was hanging out with 2 of my friends and they had walkie talkies, so I stuck with one of them while the other went somewhere else so they could test it out. I forgot what they started saying at first, but at one point my friend says "Man FUCK you Austin" into the walkie talkie and the other replies "Fuck you too", and they were both laughing while saying it. I believe that's where it all started for me.
I was intrigued at how they could say something like that while laughing. Obviously it wasn't the first time I heard the word, but it was around that time that I started using curse words.

Now, me being the little 8 year old I was, I knew I wasn't supposed to be using them and I didn't say them anywhere except around my friends. But then I realized that it was time to tone it down... for a couple years at least. When I was about 11 or 12, I started cursing a whole lot more than I used to. To be 100% honest, I really didn't care if I didn't have a reason to do it, nor do I care if I don't have a reason to do it now. Fuck it bruh.
I don't feel like I need a reason to say the words "bitch", or "shit", or anything else that comes to mind. Who the fuck are you to tell me otherwise? It just makes no sense to me.
I'll be honest though, I curse too much and a lot of the time I'd say it's pretty unnecessary. I know damn well I'll say "Why the fuck/hell is it so hot?" to myself at least 5 times a day. A few others would be:
    - "Why does this shit take so long to load?"
    - "Fuck, I'm hungry"
    - "What the fuck is this bitch talking about now..."
    - "Man fuck this shit"
    - And etc.

You can see that I really don't need to be saying any of those things. You can also see that "fuck" is probably one of my favorite words. However, if I were to try to tone myself down, I just wouldn't feel the same. I'd be too bored with myself, and my language wouldn't seem as festive or funny as it normally is (to me). If I couldn't swear, the shit I say to myself and my friends wouldn't even be half as funny as they really are. It'd be too tedious and plain. Even if I do use these same words every single day, their comedic effects are still there if used properly and at the right time.

Of course, you guys have probably noticed that I don't normally curse as much as I did in this post. I do have a great amount of self-control (thankfully), so I'm able to contain myself to a certain degree most of the time. I'm conscious that there are members who prefer not to see such words all over the forums, so I respect that to a certain degree.
I also tend to censor myself when I'm around family, small children, or people I don't know too much yet, out of respect again. I wouldn't want someone saying "fuck" or "bitch" around my child, so I won't say it around theirs. If I'm around friends who I've known for a while, that's a completely different story.

In the end, I enjoy swearing a lot, and I know I don't have a reason to do it, but I also don't feel like I need one either. I will censor myself to a degree around people out of respect, because everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and while we may not agree with it, we must at least respect it.
Will I ever stop swearing completely because of someone else? Nah, fuck that. :P

I swear every once in a while online, usually to express a stronger emotion or to add humor to a statement. In person, I swear more often, but only around good friends and not in excess. It's also for the same reasons, too. I find swearing can be hilarious in the right situations with the right moderation. A well placed sigh of "well shit" can cause people to burst into laughter.

Funny enough, I actually swear far, far less than most people around me. Then again, I am a college student, so the bar is set pretty damn high. Oh hey, there I go again.

I've been raised to keep swearing to a minimum, as not to offend people. However, I see nothing wrong with language like that. It comes down to the simple fact that it is just a word, and it remains just a word unless it is used to attack other people, which is rarely the case. I am definitely a lot more comfortable swearing online than in real life as to honor my familys' wishes, but it comes down to the simple fact that people might get offended just a little too easily.

Sure, maybe the f word is a little graphic if you know the meaning, and it shouldn't be used. However, some "swear" words are just religious terminology such as "damn" or "hell." The s word is a synonym for fecal matter, the a word is a synonym for rear end or donkey, the two b words have their own meanings, etc.

The only time swearing really bothers me is when it makes no sense. Some people just seem to throw random f bombs in their sentences, and it really makes no sense from a contextual point of view.

As I grow up, the more swearing seems to be a part of how society is. I have five teachers at school, and I have heard all of them swear at least five times since the beginning of the year. If you get offended by this sort of thing, then living in our society is going to just get more and more difficult as you get older.

    That's how life works.

This is why I worry for myself. I can't seem to take swearing, as it really bothers me for some reason. Maybe it is the way I grew up, or experiences I've, well, experienced, but for some reason, swearing is just too much for me...
