Brock started the familiar bouncy intro before singing Now, Old Mister Johnson had a problem of his own,
He had a little Meowth that just wouldn't leave his home;
He tried and he tried to give the Meowth away,
He gave it to a trainer goin' far, far away....

The campers joined in for the chorus. But the Meowth came back the very next day,
The Meowth came back, we thought he was a goner
But the Meowth came back; he just couldn't stay away...

So he gave it to a lady going up in a balloon, Brock started the next verse alone.
He told her for to take it to Lunala in the moon;
The balloon came down about ninety miles away,
Where the balloon is, where I can't say...

But the Meowth came back the very next day,
The Meowth came back, we thought he was a goner
But the Meowth came back; he just couldn't stay away... the campers joined in.

Brock smiled--the kids usually got into this song every year.

"Well..." He played an expectant chord before singing again. The man around the corner swore he'd kill the Meowth on sight,
He gerryrigged an arrow up with nails and dynamite;
He waited and he waited for the Meowth to come around,
But ten million pieces of the man was all they found.... The camp roared with laughter at this.

Brock thought for a moment for a quieter song to calm things down and transition to storytime. "Everybody turn to #36--that's 'Here Comes the Sun'"

Cheers filled the air as Brock started the song's iconic intro. He then sang

Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
And I say it's all right...

"Here Comes the Sun" gave way to a slower melody. "There was once a man who had three sons, as many stories often begin." Brock began over the relaxed melody. Two of them--their names are not important--were clever young men, and the third, the youngest--we'll call him Jack--was considered a fool."

Excited whispers filled the air--was Brock telling "Jack and Epona"? If he did, he often used a grasswhistle to represent Jack summoning the divine Ponyta.

Even Brock was laughing before he composed himself. "I'm glad you think so, but let's not spoil anything for those who haven't heard it before, okay?" he grinned.

After playing a few uncertain notes, he want on "The two elder sons looked after the farm, and they liked dressing up in fancy clothes and fantasizing about being rich. But the youngest, whose name was Jack, liked to go off into the forest to collect mushrooms, and when at home he spent most of his time sitting by the great kitchen stove."

He sets the guitar aside for a moment as he goes on "One year, the father got very sick, and knew his time to die was close. So he called in his sons and told them..."

He switches to a gentle older man voice. "When I have joined Arceus in the heavens, bring me bread to my grave for three nights."

He pauses to pick a suitable blade of grass. "After clinging to life for a few weeks, the father succumbed, and was buried. That same night the eldest son should have gone to the grave as his father ordered. But either he was lazy or he was afraid, for he said to his youngest brother...."

He whispers to Ash in a younger man voice "Jack, take my place tonight; you go to father's grave. I'll buy you a cookie in return."

As himself, he continues "Jack agreed, packed some bread, and went to his father's grave. There he sat down and waited. At midnight the grave opened, his father's spirit rose out of it and said..."

n character as the father, he asks "Who's there? Is it you, my eldest son? Tell me what is happening in the world. Are the Growlithes barking or the Mightyenas howling?"

"Yes, it is I, your son," Ash answers as Jack. "But all is quiet in the world."

"The spirit ate the bread Jack had brought and vanished." Brock continues as himself. "Jack made his way home, gathering mushrooms as he went. His eldest brother asked him..."

As the eldest brother, he asks Ash "Did you see Father?"

"Yes." Ash replies as Jack.

"Did he eat the bread?" Brock presses for more information.

"Yes. He ate all he wanted." Ash assures Brock as Jack.
