The anime adaptation of Pokémon has been going on for over twenty years now, following the never ending journey of the perpetually 10 year old Ash Ketchum. Many people seem to think that the quality has gone progressively downhill, while others disagree. Regardless of which stance you take, one thing remains inevitable: its going to have to end at some point. Even if it will take over another 20 years to do so.

Personally, I think that the anime should end with Ash returning to Pallet Town after a year has finally passed and its time for the next Indigo League Tournament. When he arrives at the tournament with a team made up from some of his strongest Pokémon from across the many years, he is met by all of his friends that he's made over the course of his journey who have shown up to support him. He makes his way through the tournament, battling a number of his rivals along the way, until he finally makes it to the finals and he has to face his strongest opponent yet: Red. They remain on even ground for the entirety of the battle until finally they're both down to just their Pikachu. Both trainers order their Pikachu to use Thundershock and the screen cuts away before we can see who wins. It then goes to a montage showing highlights from across the many years of the anime's history as the credits role by and a medley of the various opening themes plays.

Ooh, that's an interesting choice of opponent, BZR! I wonder if that's canonically possible?

If the anime has been going on for 20 years, I probably haven't seen it in 17, so I'm out of date. Something I would like to see: Ash completes some important task: not saving the entire world or permanently dissolving Team Rocket, but maybe something really important personally to just one other character. And then... he passes the torch. As Ash walks away, this new hero has Pokéball in hand and partner Pokémon by their side, looking to the horizon and to new challenges. (whether this is the end of the series or just the implied transition to a new one which may or may not ever be made, I don't know, but it would make a nice conclusion)

I agree with you BZ- I think Ash should return to Pallet Town and see his mom or something. Or maybe *quite possibly* see his father?

Hm... I think that a rematch with the Darkrai Trainer from the Sinnoh League where Ash wins might make for a good finale. After all, we never see the rest of that team, just Darkrai and Latios.

I should point out that he anime has been following the 4 moves rule and that Pikachu no longer has Thundershock. He does however have Thunderbolt.

As for how the anime itself is fairing, aside from Ash's stagnant character development, I think it's been doing rather well since X and Y started up and Sun and Moon was a rather nice break from the norm of the series: Ash leaves Pallet Town to visit another region, travelling all over it to gather 8 badges and challenge the league. So far, he's been pretty much staying in one spot instead of collecting Z-Crystals in the manner the player does in the games.

He is collecting them and exploring Alola; it's just more subdued compared to before as they gave it more of a slice-of-life feel. Team Rocket would also be a much bigger threat, having nearly caught Pikachu multiple occasions, if it weren't for Bewear. I will say this however: there's no telling where it's going to go in Gen 8.

I'm not sure what ending I would want, but I know that I would want it to end with him getting the Champion's Title somewhere. Who knows? He might become Alola's Champ. It's not like it has a league yet in the anime, but that would probably just be the easy way.
