"The cake is a lie", as an idiom means, "You are chasing after an empty, unattainable goal."

Have you ever been promised something for doing one action, but in return got nothing? Or perhaps, you promised someone else something just to motivate, only to withdraw your statement later on? How does it make you feel when someone goes back on their word? Any other thoughts on this? Discuss!

Personally, my parents do this all the time. They tell me that if I do this certain thing, they'll give me some money or let me go to a this party or some other thing like that. Of course, I get frustrated whenever they do this, but without it, I wouldn't have done it otherwise.

Why not give some detail on your experience? I left mine pretty vague haha.

Well my parents told me that if I get a job, they'd buy stuff for me more often (like the "more expensive" things)
So I got a job. I never saw the money I earned because they took it, and every time I ask them to buy me something (which is not that often) they never do, unless it's my birthday or something, because they tell me to GET A JOB, which if you read the first sentence didn't go so well
I feel like my life is one big cycle of sadness

Wow that was really dark of me!
I'm gonna end this on a high note; my parents love me enough to give me money for lunch and know that I'm going to buy Pokémon cards with it :3
    And Spinda [3D='spinda']
Because he's so friggin dizzy! XD

This kind of stuff actually happened to me in the past. I would always do stuff for random people so I could be friendly and "fit in" but in the end I would always get backstabbed or nothing in return from them ewe'

At least now, I learn to be more careful lol

I usually make good judgments, but there have been times where I loaned video games to friends back in school, only to be given the dreadful statement: "Oh, I "lost" the game, but I promise I'll replace it!". Days later... weeks later... months later, still no replacement or reimbursement of any kind.

I've had this happen to me tons of times throughout my life, but the ones that took the cake [no pun intended] have been ones in school and with my mom/grandmother. "If you do well in school, we'll give you/do ____ for you!" is a popular one. Another one that still bothers me a little was from Christmas of 2014; I'd just gotten out of the hospital the night before from a surgery, so my grandma included some money in my gifts so I could buy something to cheer up with. But my mom ended up needing to borrow half of it for herself with the promise of paying me back later. She never did, and then a couple months later we were eating at a restaurant when we received some news that a family member had just passed away, and I used the last of my un-spent cash to tip our waitress for dinner since nobody else was in the condition to, again being falsely promised by my mom that she'd give it back to me later. I never got to use the money to buy my friends gifts like I'd wanted to, which is a little unfair to them.

When I was in 7th grade, I'd made the silly mistake of letting someone in my art class borrow my copy of Animal Crossing: Wild World and he never gave it back after promising that he would, in addition to saying he'd give me some other things in return. But it's neither the money from the above scenario or the game that I'm upset about; it's just the fact that they lied that bothered me.

I used to want to be a diplomat, and then I realized it wasn't possible. Another time that happened was when I was into coding thinking I'll get a job with Namco. I gave up, because it wasn't possible. It just wasn't.
