I'm curious about this. What is your opinion on the Death Penalty? If someone does something REALLY terrible, do you think it's justified to end their life as punishment?

Personally I keep going back and forth. My moral side is against it, but my practical side believes sometimes it is necessary...

Also, as a side note, I've been told a few times that if you're pro-life, you're hypocritical if you believe in the death penalty (and visa versa; being pro-choice and not believing in the death penalty). I disagree, I think they're two totally different situations, but what do you think?

I can't even vote... I can never decide my opinion on this. On one side, I can hardly think of killing anyone as "justified". Everything about that just seems horribly wrong to me, but at the same time the last thing we'd want is for people like that to somehow escape prison and go around bringing havoc wherever time. Yeah, some of those people would go around killing people, which definitely isn't a good thing, and I can see how an execution could be a clear solution to that, but I really am not a fan of the idea of the government using death to solve problems. Even problems that drastic.

So... I don't know. I can't really make an opinion on it.

I support it for heinous crimes. I think of it this way: if someone is convicted of a crime where they will spend the rest of their life in prison, their life for all intents and purposes is forfeit already. They will never be free again. Why spend thousands upon thousands of dollars of a nation's budget a year on keeping them alive? It makes much more pracitcal sense to kill them. Moreover I think they should make the death penalty more efficient, because we have people sitting on death row for decades, living dead men consuming rescources for no good reason. I know the reason for this is to ensure guilt is certain, and prudence in this respect is good and all, but there is just too much red tape that clogs it up. Some can be cut away. Death penalty for small crimes is ridiculous and I don't really condone lynching, but if it's something they're going to be locked away forever for, why not just kill them and save space and money instead? That is logical to me. Canada has done away with the death penalty and I wish they would bring it back.

I tend to take a utilitarian approach to matters like these.

I can understand where they are coming from, but it depends on your reasons. If you are against abortion for the idea that all life no matter what is sacred and then condone the death penalty, then yes, that's hypocritical.

You actually bring up a good point that I hadn't really thought of. You're right about the fact that if they're being shut up in prison for the rest of they're life then they're practically already dead anyway.

I'm highly with it. I think people who commit these crimes are best dead than being alive. It's kind of a weird mindset but Doima brought up a few points I would have too. I hate to see people who have done something so awful get away with it. The justice system over here is appalling. I really hate it.

Over here, we don't have the death penalty anywhere, (As far as I know) but if they brought it in I'd support the idea. Not avidly, but I do think that certain people deserve it for the things they've done. Here, if you stab or hurt some one, you'll go to jail for like 6 months. If you get benefit money you're not entitled to, you get years. The system is somewhat fucked already.

The Death Penalty contradicts the purpose of life. Prisons condemn those who demonstrate the natural consequences of a flawed society to an existence of confinement, shame and almost complete denial of creative expression. War slows and often halts the development of mankind, destroys property and innocent lives, and makes the public susceptible to negative influence through propaganda.

America is often referred to as the Land of the Free...and yet as a nation, it has the highest incarceration rate of all the countries in the world.

I do not support the death penalty.

I don't support the death penalty in most situations because there's always the chance that the convicted is actually innocent; our judicial system is by no means perfect. I also don't think we have the right to dictate who lives and who dies.

    I support the death penalty.

I just feel that it's needed for those criminals who do the worst. If they are known and caught several times for doing such a ruthless and uncaring deed to others, such as; rape, killing, kidnapping (don't get me started on kidnappers), I feel that this should be one of their end results. Why bother keeping them in jail? When all they do is keep doing the same thing when they are released. I have a very negative view on people like that and feel that they should feel the same terrible fate that their victims feel.

Yes it's taking another life away. But what is one criminal's life compared to the several hundred or so, that they murdered?

I feel some people can not be saved. They can never be turned back into a helpful member of society. I'm not saying I'm right, I could be mistaken. But if you don't care about killing, raping, and such at some point, you probably never will.

There's no point in life sentence, if they might end up releasing you on good behaviour sometime (They do that here I think). And there's no point in life sentence whatsoever, actually. It's not like you really experience life in prison. You're just there.

I think Death Penalty should take effect on reincidental offenders. Maybe even according to like a sort of point system, only it's not really called that because it wouldn't be taken seriously. But say you murder someone, get off jail, then murder somebody else, or do some other big crime like kidnapping, rapery, breaking in, assault, etc. Then, you're given the death penalty.

But also say you were caught robbing a number of times, 4, 6 times. (Or some other relatively minor crime, in comparison) Then, still, you are of no good to society. You are just another leech that unlawfully feeds on those who work, or who at the very least lead a mostly honest life. Prison won't change that.

I think Death Penalty should be a thing. I also think it's borderline barbaric, but that's just how mankind is, still. I'd definitively like it if we'd evolved past that point, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I'm personally against it for reasons others have already stated; chief among them the possibility of wrongful convictions. As it is, LWPOP does the job.

If the death penalty must remain however, there must be an absolute 100% certainty of guilt; no room for any doubt whatsoever.
