Over the past few years, mainstream media has shined a light on the genre of Dystopian writing. These include books such as The Hunger Games, Divergent, The Maze Runner, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, and loads more.

It usually follows the journey of one person as they bring down the entire civilization that they have lived in their entire life. Oddly enough, the civilization itself provides them with the tools to do it. A futuristic, imagined universe in which oppressive societal control and the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through corporate, bureaucratic, technological, moral, or totalitarian control. Dystopias, through an exaggerated worst-case scenario, make a criticism about a current trend, societal norm, or political system. In a dystopian story, society itself is typically the antagonist; it is society that is actively working against the protagonist's aims and desires.

What do you guys think of the theme of Dystopian? Do you like it? Do you dislike it?
Why do you think it's so popular among readers such as teens?
Do you think we can learn from these stories?
What are some of your favorite Dystopian books? Have you read any at all?

I generally enjoy a majority of Dystopian literature, although they have become more popular with most of them becoming movies recently. Its interesting stepping into a new world with a different atmosphere, moral code, laws, and forms of society because its something many of us can't imagine happening to the real world (even though its not impossible). The primary reason teens have become attached to most Dystopian worlds is because they can think about how they would be if they lived in them. We read through the narrator's descriptive details and the protagonist's feelings, but as a reader we can imagine ourselves living and experiencing these worlds with our imagination and dreams. This additional thinking can really make Dystopian literature more memorable and enjoyable. From what I've noticed is that these types of stories and such teach us not to conform and accept society for what it is. There is also a lot of self discovery going on with pretty much every Dystopian protagonist. My favorite Dystopian books would have to be the Divergent series, but I also enjoyed the Hunger Games, Maze Runner, City of Ember, and The Host.

I really love dystopian novels, I find them really interesting in both the community aspect of how people live, and the psychological aspect of how these people think and feel because of what they've known. I think these novels are popular among teens though because of their sense of rebellery...and teens always want to rebel! Haha.
I do think we learn from these novels- ways we can be avoid being corrupt in the future, I think.

I read books such as the Hunger Games, Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, Attack on titan (I believe could fall into this), and No.6- a manga that's my favorite of these listed.

Dystopian novels are interesting to read. I've read most of the ones that are a huge hit now. Now, most teenagers are becoming to be adults, and I think these books are telling them kind of like right from wrong. If you're going to rule, don't rule like this, something like this book might happen.
My favorites include the Giver Trilogy, and Divergent. The hunger games is way too out there, although I did like the ending.

I don't approve of any forms of dystopia if it's "potentially" being used as metaphor for things to come. You could call me a conspiracy theorist, but I believe book/movie series like Hunger Games is just a form of symbolism.

I do, however, approve of schools (both public and private) teaching children of past dystopia events (such as the Holocaust) to prevent such events from taking place again. When schools censor this topic of History, we are more doomed to repeat our mistakes. Across the globe, we're already seeing this type of censorship, and it's especially becoming more apparent in First World nations (U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia etc.)
In a nutshell, dystopia time periods and events of government betrayal and genocide ought to be taught in school, but in form of entertainment, it can be kind of concerning if you're aware of the "Secret Society" like I am.

I like Dystopian novels, though I feel like some of the more modern Dystopians are more clinging to a trend than trying to actually have a message. That saddens me, seeing as how powerful Dystopian stories like The Giver, Anthem, and Fahrenheit 451 are. The fact that stories with such power and emotion can spawn tales just squeezing out 'feels' instead of bringing a thoughtful message is disgusting to me. Thankfully not all modern Dystopians are like this, but it seems the modern times are trying to take the harsh, declarative edge out of true Dystopian works.

LIKE THE FUCKING MODERN THE GIVER MOVIE DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THAT PIECE OF

I tend to enjoy dystopian novels. Fighting the power, bringing forth a new world order... that's some powerful stuff for dreamers, y'know? Definitely one of the reasons teens like the genre so much. I'm pretty sure one of my fanfics I'm writing could be considered a dystopian story, so I'm able to get a lot of inspiration from other stories.

Meh. I like 'em and all, but it's becoming like the scifi movie genre; it's getting seriously overdone. It was cool when there weren't fifty million dystopian stories, but now it's frankly getting kind of annoying. Still gonna read them though, never know what you might find.
