The Wii U was never as successful as its predecessor, the Wii, and it looks like Nintendo, despite saying that the Wii U would not be replaced by the NX, is leaving the Wii U for dead. The Wii U is only get two more major releases for the next year if you don't count Zelda Wii U which will also be released on NX. These games are Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE and the unpromising Paper Mario Color Splash. It appears Nintendo has no other games in development for the Wii U which looks less than promising for the system.

So, is the Wii U dead? I think it probably is which is a major shame. I really like the Wii U and it has tons of great titles like Smash Bros., Xenoblade X, and Pokken Tournament. If only it sold better.

I just bought a wii u recently and already it is kicking the bucket...
So what happens now, do they just cease production of the console entirely
    or just release the NX?

I've always found the WiiU to be kind of dead :S I never found any titles that I truly enjoyed on it. I honestly regret buying it. There were a few nice titles, but they kind of grew old fast, and I always found the titles to be overpriced for what they were. Hopefully these last few titles will make me finally enjoy the WiiU...

I really loved the Wii U. I just hope that Nintendo can continue the quality games for the NX, and not worry about what arbitrary fluctuation killed the Wii U this time.

The games were finally getting good. Xenoblade X proved just how nice the gamepad worked with a system, providing the super super useful bottom screen map while playing through the game. Things were improving, and although they certainly could release some great titles for the wii U, The NX brings promise of some pretty amazing games.

Also, regardless of system, a smash bros game is going to be amazing. Props to Splatoon for being a nice spin on the shooter too.

I'm going to be on the positive side and say that I extremely enjoyed the Wii U and it played a crucial part in my life, it gave me happiness and allowed me to escape sadness many times now! I loved the games it had such as Super Smash Brothers*, Hyrule Warriors, Pokken Tournament, Pokémon Rumble World, Mario Maker and off course: The Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD! I had more games there too! I'm also looking forward to the NX, and I look forward to it as Nintendo said that there will be more first party games (Kid Icarus!) and third party (Pokémon!)

    * Super Smash Brothers NX confirmed.

Generally, Nintendo continues support for the previous console for a short while after the new one is released. If not, they make the new one backwards compatible.

I see. Well hopefully this new one is not super expensive.,....
That was one of the selling points of the wii u, it was a fair amount cheaper than xbox and playstation.

I honestly think that the rumours that a lot of the biggest Wii U games recently (sadly minus Xenoblade cause I doubt the ability for that to work without the gamepad) will be released for NX will be true, and I also think that compared to the Wii and DS where WiFi wasn't as important as is is with the Wii U and 3DS, they most likely won't discontinue WiFi support for the Wii U. The fact that they made Splatoon, which is pretty much online only, so late in the Wii U's life cycle, I believe that they won't shut off the Wii U internet support, and they put a bit more care into most online servers with their games (*cough* Brawl servers *cough*). I can't see them giving up on money makers like Pokken, Sm4sh Wii U, SF0, Xenoblade X and Splatoon any time soon.

However, I think they will probably move on from the Wii U pretty quickly once the NX comes out. It's weird, when it first came out, I like the gamepad, and for Splatoon and Xenoblade I love it still, but as soon as I got a GC Controller for Sm4sh and my fake GC controller broke so I couldn't use it for anything but Sm4sh, I found at least a few games frustrating.

I really wish that the Wii U had gotten some more support, the games that were released for it are fantastic. I personally loved Bayonetta/Bayonetta 2, Hyrule Warriors, Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, Mario Kart 8, and Xenoblade Chronicles X especially. Pokkén Tournament, Smash Bros, and Splatoon are also fun, despite not being my types of games. It's a shame that Nintendo is moving onto the NX so soon, but I hope that the NX is better than the Wii U, and I also hope for some backwards-compatible games.

also Xenoblade Chronicles X sequel pls you cannot end that game like that

Overall, while I did enjoy the Wii U, it's a shame that Nintendo didn't release more games for it and that it didn't sell well. It's a fantastic system and performs smoothly (if gigantic open-world games like Xenoblade X are any indication), and it had a ton of potential, but I am glad that we got some awesome games for it nonetheless. I just hope the NX lives up to the hype it's been getting.

The Wii is dead and I'm only a little sad about it.

Would have really liked an Animal Crossing Wii U but nope, didn't happen. Such a shame. :[

These are pretty much my exact thoughts here.

With the Wii U being released with virtually no games worthy of discussion, even a year afterward (Bayonetta 2 is an exception, though I have never played it myself), it was a console destined to fail. Despite the lack of games available early on, Nintendo was able to slightly revise the market and community of the Wii U console with games like Pokken Tournament, Sm4sh, MK8, and Wind Waker HD. Sadly, many of the games for the Wii U were remakes or reskins of older games, and that did not help increase sales.

As @[member="Nate"] mentioned, Nintendo is leaving the Wii U for dead. Despite previously saying that the NX will become a "third pillar" for gaming, the claim was all ready under fire before Nintendo announced the discontinuation of the Wii U--the same claim was made about the DS system before the discontinuation of the GameBoy systems.

I'm very sad to see the system being so under-utilized since it had massive potential for home gaming, though it is vastly outweighed by the excitement and wonder I hold for the NX.
