So, Blue has been replaced by a new, friendly companion rival instead, who you'll have to battle throughout the game. And not everyone is absolutely stoked on this change. What's your opinion on the switch to a more amiable rival, instead of the snarky buttface rival we used to have?
I definitely prefer the more jerkish rivals that slowly become kinder the more you interact with them. Silver was probably the best example of this. I understand why Nintendo has been leaning more towards friendly rivals, but do they all have to be so timid and cutesy about their friendliness? What's the fun of being rivals with somebody if they're always so nice to you?
I don't like friendly rivals. They were kind of fun at first but now they just all feel the same and I just feel worse and worse actually fighting them. With rivals like Blue and Silver I can really enjoy beating them repeatedly and seeing how that changes them and makes them grow as people. But then with rivals like Hau I just feel like a huge jerk and a bully for constantly beating them when they stand no chance against me.
I'm not so sure I like that there's a friendly rival, all the previous ones have been very boring to me at least they have. They all just felt like cardboard cutouts that were little more than exp punching bags so I kinda hope they actually still did something different with this friendly rival to set him apart.
Definitely a curse. The thing I liked about the more so snarky rival was that there was actual character development. I mean even in real life, the closest friends you have are the ones you're going to fight with. I think the only 'friendly' rival I liked was Barry, but that's because he was oozing personality.
A curse. Take Shauna, Tierno and Trevor for example. Those three did jack crap, did nothing on a regular basis, and even Hau wasn't that fun. At the end of the day they were nothing more than a bag of dialogue and some free EXP. Blue, on the other hand... mmm... Blue. It was just so much fun beating his sorry butt up! The fact that he was such a jerk was just the cherry on top.
