Right now, there are over 800 Pokémon in existence, divided over seven different regions. Pokémon has been going strong for over 20 years now, and it's still beloved by many.
However, sometime in the future, Pokémon might have to change its way of doing things, because it will ne very hard to keep cranking out new and unique Pokémon and new regions all the time.

Where do you see Pokémon heading in the future? How do you think they could change their way of doing things, or do you believe they'll keep up what they're doing right now for another ten years?

I think they're going to keep doing what they're doing. Differences in a few little features, but overall the same. It's a proven safe bet, there isn't a need to radically change the formula. Spin off games, like in the past, will be where they experiment with the radically different things. Don't need to mess with something that's proven to work. I don't actually think it will be hard for them to keep coming up with designs and regions, because the massive fanbase does it for them already whether they realize it or not. So many people create Fakemon and custom regions these days; that combined with the countless beasts that pop up in myths and legends from all over the world is more than enough inspiration for new places and monsters. And though Megas were pretty much sidelined this generation, there's no reason that new megas of old favorites (some with pretty big demand from fans) could pop up again in the future too. I believe they have plenty to work with for a good long time.

The trials taking over for gyms this generation has been the largest change to a core series game yet, and even with that the idea of building a traditional league comes up as part of the game. I think Nintendo knows that they've got something that works and won't mess with it too much. Nintendo as a company always seems to me to have one foot stubbornly in the tried and true and then the other in innovation (mostly dealing with hardware there). In my opinion it would take a drastic drop in interest and sales for a new game for them to decide to really switch up the core features. They'll add a few new things along the way (like they've done with Mega Evolution and Z-Moves) but keep the bulk the same.

The core games will be around for a long time, I believe. The formula works and minor tweaks will be implemented, of course, but like @[member="Dusty"] said the bulk of the games will remain the same. Maybe an icy region or one based of Australia would be nice. And truthfully, if the fanbase can come up with so many wonderful and different designs, the developers of Pokémon should be capable as well.

But on the note of different things. I would like to see some more spin-off games. While the puzzle games are often kinda meh, the RPG style games have always done pretty good with the fanbase. For example, more Ranger games, Snap 2 (With a lot more courses, secret Pokémon and the like). Maybe even a breeder game, in which you breed, train, and sell Pokémon from a customizable nursery or hatchery.

I believe it is great as it is but a huge change could be made which is to pick your path and story. You get a new experience getting to be a completely personalized character, such as becoming a contest star, a breeder, a battler. It gives you options in what you pick to respond with so maybe have what you say lead to an outcome over another. Have it change the way characters feel about you overall. I agree with @[member="AzurAurora"] about there being more spin off games. Ranger is my favorite games so I would love more of those with a deep amazing story

I second most of what's been said here already, and in particular can't help but (biasedly) feel that an Australia based region would be great, especially since it is a region so specifically known for having unique species and exaggerated climates. It doesn't worry me, at least, certainly not at this stage, I think it's got plenty of life left in it. Got to admit though, I don't know how I really feel when I think about there being 800 already, a part of me is traditional and doesn't want the number to get totally out of hand, but another part of me seems to totally adapt to it within the game itself without noticing.
