The Godfather

Pretty sure nobody ever thought that Marlon Brando talking in a wheezy voice would lead to what's widely regarded as one of the greatest films of yadda yadda yadda.

Anyway, based on a book (which some people seem to forget), the Godfather is...really less about a character than about a title, as a very fascinating sort of transition is witnessed and done in such a gradual way that you'll hit the end of the movie and wonder just how it happened in the first place.

Be advised however, that the movie's really not for the faint of heart. Like Silence of the Lambs, it's earned its R rating. Still, it's well worth checking out if you haven't.
