I was wondering what you guys think about a general level up system, whenever you play games such as MMOs, or any other game that has a level up system (besides Pokémon).

First of all, do you like the concept of "leveling up"? Does it teach you things, beyond the aspects on how to actually play the game? Because, some people have been wondering that, as you level up, your knowledge and experience also kind of "levels up" with the game, as the character in question goes stronger. However, with my experience, some games with a level up system require me to grind so much just to meet with the game's standard expectations, and.. sometimes I'm just a little iffy about that.

And that brings me to my next point - do you feel that a level up system isn't quite necessary for games that come to mind? I've heard that sometimes, people don't like the level-up system in WoW, and hey, sometimes I don't really much care for the level up system in Leauge of Legends.

Well, just to re-literate the topic of this thread... What do you think of a level-up system? Do you feel that they are unnecessary for particular games that come to mind? Would you say that leveling up is worth it in most, or just in few cases? Any other thoughts?

No one has answered this yet...? Wow, haha. I don't have a strong opinion on this but I love leveling up. It gives you something to work towards throughout the whole game and without it certain things would be incredibly easy. Some games, such as Fantasy Life require you to be a certain level to use stronger weapons, armor and more. Whilst I wasn't used to this, it was still a very interesting concept and really made me work for it. It was fun to level up for a change. I think more games should implement this.

I love level up systems! In offline games, anyway. Absolutely haaate 'em in multiplayer. Find them very unfair, especially when all you want to do is get trophies/achievements for a particular game, and not get wailed on by max level players constantly. But if I'm in a RPG or other games that use a levelling system, it's something I enjoy. It's like a goal to strive towards, even if after you reached the max level in some games you barely get an award or indeed anything at all.

Hmm. I don't know what games that have the system would work better without them, so sorry about that. I agree with the WoW thing, though. Especially since I heard it's a decade old now. What's gonna happen to the poor, new player when they come across someone who's been an avid player since the beginning? Yikes.

I used to play an MMORPG named Lineage 2 and you don't really get much from the level-up system (but it kinda depends which server you're using). Sure, you got new skills every level, but you had to level up the skills separately and on its own, and that was what defined how good you were at a specific class. For example: Healer class. I used to play as a Healer every single time because I played with guys and they preferred to be DDs (damage dealers), but a +0 heal would end up getting your entire party killed - if you were going for a boss, you'd need at least a +10 Heal skill just to make sure they didn't die during recharge.

Anyways - I noticed in Final Fantasy XIII that their levelling system was.. different. It was something I enjoyed, but I preferred the levelling system in XIII-2, no matter how much I screwed up the first time by investing in only one class, leaving the other under leveled.

I guess what I mean to say is that the level system kind of depends on the game. If you need to level up a skill that you earned while levelling, then that's just redundant. But if you level to get better skills, better stats and whatnot, then it's alright for me. =)

I remember playing an online game called Water Margin Online and it also had a leveling up system. In the game we were to choose a job - warrior, scholar, samurai, thief, etc - and go do missions. So the leveling up system is useful since the higher level you are, the more monsters you can defeat which results in more stuff and exp points you get which also leads to learning new attacks which just kicks ass!
