After Ash was knocked out of contention for the Indigo League title, he was sent to the Orange Islands to retrieve a "GS Ball" from Professor Ivy's lab and then transport it back to Professor Oak's lab.

Eventually, once Ash finished the Orange League and began his journey through Johto, he and his group eventually gave the GS Ball to Kurt in Azalea Town, in which we never saw it or heard about it again.

Years ago, it was said that the GS Ball was supposed to contain Celebi, but the reason the GS Ball plot was dropped suddenly was because Celebi would be the subject of the fourth Pokémon movie.

Did you find it strange that the GS Ball plot that was a key element of the Orange Islands and early Johto arcs was dropped so suddenly that we never heard about it again? What did you think was in the GS Ball when you first heard about it?

I remember eagerly wanting to find out what the GS Ball situation was really about. Though I didn't really think about it at the time, I eventually noticed that we never heard about the strange ball again after it was dropped off with Kurt in Azalea Town. Though I eventually heard that the GS Ball was supposed to contain Celebi, I thought at first that maybe there was nothing inside it but a solid core, given that all attempts by Professor Ivy and her assistants to open it and transport it to Professor Oak's lab were unsuccessful.
