So, when you're building a game, how do you go about doing it? How do you start the development process?

Do you have a plan to begin with? Do you start from scratch and make it up as you go along? Do you design the whole game world first, then add detail? Or do you slowly make the world, adding the detail from the beginning?

Let me know! I'd love to know what you guys do when you're making your games! :)

See I plan to be a game developer as a career, I still can't have good thoughts on this topic because i have no experience, and not enough knowledge to give good advice and so forth.
I have made games before though, and mainly the first thing is story, plot and writing. It's also good to have notes on levels or worlds you plan to add in your game. When it comes to FPS games, if you are working on a Map, drawing out the map on paper, is usually the first thing to do, and no i'm not talking about concept art, i'm mainly talking about an overhead view of the map and where items or objects will be placed. As for my experience in making an RPG game, writing out the plot is the main factor before worrying about map and enemy design. Overall there are so many ways to start a game, but i think the main thing people will start with, is the idea, and the story. Hopefully i'm credible enough here xD

I agree with what sohrob101 has said.

The most important thing that you need in order to start is the story; I've read many guides that say the script is one of the first things that you need to make before doing your own game. So I would say that someone should work out the plot and characters before they do anything, then do scripting and go from there. :)

I don't really have lots of experience, but I think building a game is similar to the writing process. Organize Ideas. Make a plot draw out the region and characters, what is new, what is taken from a different game. Once you have the main stuff you can start adding little things. Such as music or separate art. Character design, battle animation ad so on. Get creative and have fun with it. Do research on the games if you want it to be similar. When your have finished the project do some "Revise and Edit". Play through the game and change what you don't like about it. Your world is how you want it. Have it perfect in your own way.
PS: Writing Process is loose and not strict, but just keep in some of the steps and you can improve your game.
PSS: Revising and Editing is important!
