The Smeargle Guide - Sketch Breeding for Gen VISo! I heard you wanted to chain egg moves on your Pokémon for breeding purposes? Who told me? Arceus did. Jokes aside, let's begin! Like in my last guide (from another place I posted it on), I used Oshawott and Smeargle. Well, in this example, I'll be borrowing them again. Don't worry if you don't have an Oshawott right now in your game. If there's another Pokémon you want to breed with, then go ahead and use it. This is all example! Unfortunately, X and Y got rid of the very fun, very annoying, and very useful Double Battle grass from the previous generation of games. That makes it harder on us that want to chain egg moves on specific Pokémon. However! There is a way! In Lumoise City, there are some fine dining restaurants; Le Nah, Le Yeah and Le Wow. There's also the Sushi High Roller, but that's an arm and a leg for common folk who are always breeding and have to pay up a hefty fine of over $1,000 a Pokémon they put in the daycare for that specific breeding project they are doing, like myself. The easiest one to access is Le Nah, which is always a Double Battle meal and on South Blvd in Lumoise City. It is located east of Route 4's gate upon entering the city itself the first time (and always that way after that). So, when you fly to South Blvd of Lumoise City, just go to the right until you see a Taxi cab near and a lady dressed like a tourist outside of the restaurant. Before we do that, you'll need to go catch yourself a Smeargle. They are found on Route 7, around level 15-20. They are pretty tricky to find, but you'll find one easy. Make sure you find a male one; if you find a female one, then keep searching or, if you have a Ditto, breed the female Smeargle until you have a male. It's better to have one that isn't Level 1 in this one unless you want to do extra work. Next, you'll need access to Dendemille Town, where the Move Rememberer is located. You'll also need access to Route 8 and the Old Rod, as well a Pokémon with the move Theif or Covet on them. Wild Espurr come with the move Covet on them, and they're on Route 6, so go catch yourself one of those little guys if you need a quick Coveter. (haha) You'll also need a Pokémon with the move Fly, too. The Old Rod can be obtained by talking to the Fisherman guy in the Ambrette Town's Aquarium, which is right next to the Pokémon Center in said town. Go down the stairs, and the Fisherman's next to the Golden Magikarp statue. So do that if you haven't yet. You'll also need a reliable website that lists Pokémon moves like Bulbapedia, Serebii, Marriland, or even apps available for iPhones, iPads, Android Tablets, what have you. As long as its reliable and accurate, then you're fine. For the Checklist: Male Smeargle - Route 7 Pokémon with Theif/Covet Old Rod Route 8 Accessibility Dendemille Town Accessibility Fly Restaurant Le Nah Pokémon website/app with move listings If you have all of these, then you're ready to go! I realized in my last guide, I could have done a similar thing and I regret it. But, that's why this one will be better. Anyway, pick a Pokémon from the Field Egg Group with chainable moves you want them to learn. Smeargles are in the Field Egg group, so it's useless if you use another group it's not compatible with. Let's get us an Oshawott with these egg moves: Night Slash Air Slash Trump Card Brine First things first, go get yourself a healthy amount of heart scales, I recommend getting ten, as you will be Heart Scaling a lot. Luvdisc were generously given to us in these games like in the previous generation, which make it all the easier. So grab that Old Rod and fish them up on Route 8. Fun thing is, the Old Rod will always fish up Luvdisc on Route 8. Make sure your Covet/Theif user is first because you'll want to snatch the Heart Scale, then kill off the Luvdisc. If it doesn't have it, that's fine; keep trying until one does. Repeat this as many times necessary until you have as many Heart Scales you want. Now that you have them, let's see what Pokémon learns the move you want to Sketch first. In this example, it's Night Slash first. According to sources, it states Dugtrio learn it at level 1. However, those are on Route 13, and they are pretty common to find on the Lumoise Badlands. So, Fly over there and snag yourself a Dugtrio. Doesn't matter what gender. For me, I used the Farfetch'd you get from an in-game trade Hiker in Sauntalune City. When you have yourself a Dugtrio, Fly to Dendemille Town and Scale the Night Slash on Dugtrio. Next, Fly over to Lumoise City, go for Le Nah restaurant with your Dugtrio and Smeargle as the first two slots of your party. Note 1: Make sure your Smeargle is SLOWER than the one you're trying to Sketch or else you'll waste a Sketch! Note 2: Smeargle learns Sketch every 11 levels. So if you caught it at level 20 for example, it learns Sketch again at 21. Have Dugtrio/The Pokémon you want attack a Pan-monkey with Night Slash or the move you want to Sketch, and then let Smeargle sketch it. Boom, one down. Finish the rest of the restaurant, leave a tip if you like, and leave. Fly to Dendemille Town and Scale Sketch back on. Next, let's see who learns Air Slash earliest. According to sources, Charizard can learn it at level 1, via Scale. Farfetch'd also learns it at level 49. If you did the in-game trade and got the Farfetch'd, kept it and leveled it up, by now it should have it. If you got Charmander from Scyamore and it's a Charizard now, go Scale the move on. Pidgey learn it at level 49 as well, so if you somehow have a Pidgey at such a high level, then you're good. Zubat learn it at level 45, Golbat at 52, and Scyther at 53. Let's stick with ones we can get fastest. When you have the move you want to sketch next, head over to Le Nah again, and redo. Sketch the move you want, in this example, Air Slash, after the other Pokémon moves. Boom, two down, two more to go. If you have the moves you want already, then go on ahead and breed your Pokémon together. If you're wanting four moves on a Pokémon, then keep reading if you like. After that, Scale Sketch back on Smeargle, it should be around level 20 by now. If Smeargle learned Sketch again, then no need to Scale it. For the next move, it's Trump Card. A very tricky move to get, as there's only four Pokémon (three in X and Y) who can learn it. Good news, all of those are catchable in X and Y. Eevee learn it at level 45 (Route 10), Slowking learn it at level 49 (Slowpoke catchable on Route 12, need King's Rock + Trade to evolve, though) and Minun learn it at level 51 (Route 7). Whoever you have that has it first, then use them. If the next move you want Sketch'd isn't available, I apologize. If you have them, great! Take them to Le Nah again, Sketch the move you want, in this case, Trump Card, and finish the battles after. I feel not sorry taking out the Pan-monkeys so many times. Once you have the move taught, Scale Sketch back onto Smeargle again. If it learned Sketch by itself upon level up, then don't worry about it. Last Pokémon to get for the last move you want. Now we want the move Brine. Pokémon that learn it earliest and are catchable in X and Y are: Horsea (at level 30, found by using Super Rod in Cyllage City), Hariyama (level 1, Scale it back, found on Route 11), and Cubchoo (level 21, found at the Frozen Cavern). Whoever you pick, doesn't matter. When you have the last Pokémon you want to Sketch with you, head back to Le Nah again, and Sketch the move. Make sure Smeargle is slower than the Pokémon you're trying to sketch. If Smeargle is faster for whatever reason, make the Pokémon you want to Sketch the move, use that move, then for Smeargle's turn, use something like an X-Accuracy to waste a turn. On the next turn, have Smeargle Sketch, and it'll sketch the move you wanted. The trick is, Smeargle will Sketch the last move that was used. So, no worries about it Sketching another move selected if you did that. Now that you have all the moves you wanted, the ending result will look like this: Isn't Art Dog the coolest? Okay, I swapped Brine and Trump Card's places when organizing, but the gist is there. Now, make sure you have a female of the Pokémon you want to breed those moves onto for the Eggs and walla! You shall have it! In my case, I will get Oshawotts with all these moves attached on. If your female Pokémon has the ability and/or nature you want them to have, make them hold the Everstone. Or, if Smeargle has the nature and the female as the IVs you want, make her hold the Destiny Knot to pass down those IVs and Smeargle holds the Everstone to pass down the nature. That's it! Hope you enjoyed this guide! Any questions or anything like that, please ask! I'll be happy to help as much as I can. Happy Sketching!
Ah yes, Le Nah. Great minds think alike! I have an additional tip, maybe you could add it to the guide: Vivillon can learn Thief, and what's really swell is that it can have the ability Compound Eyes, which boosts the accuracy of a its's moves, but most importantly it Doubles the chance Wild Pokémon will be holding items if it's in the lead spot! Quite useful, if I do say so myself. Grind levels on that Vivillon and "borrow" those Heart Scales! Hope I was helpful!
So through using this method, you can teach pretty much any Pokémon in the field egg group any move you want? So you can have something crazy like a Fire Blast Chespin?
Not exactly, Pokémon only have a selection of moves that can be learned through breeding. Here is an example of all Egg Moves the Chestaught family can have: http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-xy/egg/652.shtml#bellydrum For example, if you wanted Synthesis on your Chespin, you would need either a Pokémon that can learn that move OR Smeargle. BUT Chespin can't have Fireblast under any circumstance. Hope that clears things up
