When we all started playing/watching Pokémon, there had to be things you didn't know or understood at the time. Some might be embarrassing, others might be common misconceptions! When I first got into Pokémon games, in the early 2000's, before R/S/E.. I thought Unown was a legendary. This is actually a common misconception of the time, as Unown were 'hard' to find in G/S/C and were a main focal point in the 3rd Pokémon Movie. All films before then focused mainly on legendary Pokémon, such as Mew and Mewtwo in the First Movie, Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, and Lugia in Pokémon the Movie 2000, then in the 3rd movie we got Entei, and the mysterious Unown. Now we know that they're just rare oddities among the Pokémon universe, however I won't forget the day I used all my Pokeballs on a low level Unown in the Ruins of Alph (Crystal version) and cheer to my older Pokémon-playing friend that I caught a cool legendary. I thought that Porygon could change form in the games. Not evolve, that was before I learned of Gen 2 and Porygon2. One of my first introductions to the Pokémon before I got the games and access to Cartoon Network after WB Kids's downfall was via Topps cards. Now, looking at it, I can see that it's using the move Sharpen, but back then I didn't know what moves Porygon had. I thought that it went all sharp into battle, but round and polygonal outside of fights so it could be hugged/carried around (?? I didn't know it didn't even have a real 'physical' form as it was pure AI/computer only in the series) Also among the Topps cards I had were cards based on episodes from the First Movie and the Orange Island series. The First Movie ones had bits of 'information' on various moments from the film and the Pikachu's Vacation short. One thing from the First Movie ones was that it misspelled Marill as Marril on one of the cards and it horribly confused me on Marill's spelling for a few years. One of the Orange Island cards was based on the episode "Wherefore Art Thou Pokémon?" which was about a pair of Nidoran (Male and Female) that had a secret relationship from their trainers, who hated each other. On the front it had them both as Nidoran, and the back showed them evolved as Nidorino and Nidorina. Just one problem-the card failed to mention that they had evolved at all! It left me thinking that Nidoran had 'battle forms' just like the Porygon card did, and that at one point their trainers forced the two lovers to fight one another before the main characters got them to stop somehow!
One time when I was very young, I thought Togepi was going to evolve into a legendary, because it was a Pokémon that was never seen before in the first generation. When Gold and Silver were announced, I thought Togepi would evolve into Lugia. I didn't play a lot of Pokémon at the time, so I was very ignorant.
The only misconception I can think of is I once had a Pokémon card (possibly fake) that misspelled Jolteon as Jolteom. But I also had an identical card with Jolteon spelled correctly. I was quite confused for a few years as to what its name actually was!
I always thought that 'salamence' was spelt 'salamance' and always pronounced it as such. It was only when I heard someone saying that they always thought it was spelt 'salamance' that I realised I'd been wrong my entire life.
I spent ages thinking dragon types had no weakness. (Before Fairy was introduced) I also thought grass types were called plant types. (And to be fair, that still makes more sense to me) I would bring up the whole Arcanine being a legendary thing, but let's face it, I don't think anyone knew that.
I used to think before I had any of the games or even knew much about Pokémon I used to think you could either do gyms only or contests only.
For several years I though Unown were Legendary Pokémon because of the Entei movie. Then I found out how weak they were in the game. >_> I also thought Rotom was a Legendary thanks to the battle theme that played when you fought it in Old Chateau. Why you gotta trick me like that Pearl?
@JukeboxJukain SAME! It's as if they were considering making them legendary (In the movie it out-right STATES that Unown were LEGENDARY, they were in a book of LEGENDARY Pokémon..and some scientists called them Legendary Pokémon) But decided to not do that at the last minute (Kinda like Arcanine) Unown, Rotom, and Phione are in a strange category..
I thought that I had to somehow throw stones (like Thunder Stones) at Pokémon to evolve them (don't ask) so I used Fling to throw them at Pokémon who could evolve in the hopes that I could then catch the evolved forms. I don't know how that started. I blame the Internet XD #MissingNo
When I was young I never made the connection that Pokémon was owned by Nintendo (at least partially) and was confused at their inclusion in the Super Smash Bros series when everything else in those games was all Nintendo stuff (this was before Brawl introduces third-party guest characters). When I finally realized the connection, I felt like an idiot.
I always get ground type and rock type confused, so I always think it is ground that birds are what they are weak to. To this day I use ground type moves on immune flying types and get super confused why it didn't work.
I just remembered that when I was young and couldn't read very well, I thought Lugia was called Luigia and thought it was funny that his name was so similar to Luigi. I think it was when I watched Pokémon the Movie 2000/The Power of One that I finally realized my mistake, though it was probably a while longer before it finally sunk in.
When I was little, I had a book that had pictures of Ash, Dawn, and Brock's adventures in Sinnoh. It basically highlighted episodes and characters. However, this was at a time when I thought that the anime world and game world were the same. So I would boot up Pearl and ask "Where's Alamos Town? Where's the Jublife Contest Hall? Where's the lake behind the Floroma Town PokeCenter?" Needless to say, I learned the hard way that they are two separate canons. Whoops.
I somehow always manage to forget that the Flabébé line is not a grass type. And I always wonder why Fairy attacks are so much stronger
