Have you ever played a game and discovered a new interesting fact, or discovered something you hadn't realised about yourself or people in general? Did a game get you interested in a new subject, or one you hadn't been interested in before playing? Do you think the game intentionally taught you what you learned, or was it something more accidental?

The zero escape games come to mind when I think of games that teach you new things. There's a lot of science involved with the dialogue and puzzles, as well as philosophical question and themes. Virtue's Last Reward use of The prisoner's dilemma taught me both about the rule itself, and about the existence of game theory as a whole, which I hadn't come across before. Not to mention the plethora of quantum physics references, which helped me solidify my understanding somewhat.

Any examples you guys can think of?

If there's one thing I've learned in video games in general, it's that if the opposition you encounter in life is getting more difficult to overcome, then you're going in the right direction.

I think that's a pretty good message, but if you want other specific examples, here it goes.

    - Bastion taught me that just because everything has gone to heck doesn't mean it's not worth living. Ride the changes and see where they take you.
    - Megaman X taught me that when you overcome an obstacle, you should learn from it and carry its skills with you, for they will come in handy. (you get a new powerup with each boss you beat, and every powerup is super effective against another boss)
    - Majora's Mask taught me one of the most important lessons of all. You can't make all people happy all of the time. You just can't. What you can do is make everyone happy some of the time, and that might be all they need.
    - Fallout New Vegas: The good karma you get from slaughtering bad people outweighs the bad karma you get from murdering good people. So kill everyone you see and become a saint!

As far as more earthly lessons go, I played a videogame at some point that taught me a lot about the varieties, maintenance, and proper usage of firearms, but I can't remember which game it was. SpaceChem taught me (in a very roundabout and not quite efficient way) how to balance chemical equations, so that's nice too. Call of Juarez taught me quite a bit about Old-West outlaws and some other 1800s American history.

If there is one life lesson that playing video games has taught me, it is this:

"If you wish to train for the one boss you simply cannot defeat, or to learn the skills you don't have yet, you must commit yourself to the extinction of the metal slime race."

    Dragon Quest taught me that.
...It may not be the best of lessons, but it is not easily forgotten.

Gaming taught me a lot of things, but 2 things in particular.

    - Trust nobody ( I play Dayz sometimes )
    - Frustration brings succes over time ( It really does, keep trying!)

Bravely Default (back to this already) taught me something very real about life. It stretched my knowledge and has lead to a lot of conversations with others.

Black and White. Do we see things in Black and White? Do we need to adjust? Do we need to delve deeper? I feel that a lot of society today looks at everything like it is black and white, without seeing the deep inner meanings. While something may appear to be good, and something may appear to be bad, there are deep thoughts inside the good and bad that may just flip the table.

This is just what I've been thinking about recently.
