A few days ago we got our first look at the Mario movie. The comments were turned off, so I didn't get to see what other people had to say about the trailer. What are your thoughts on this trailer? How is the movie looking so far?
Honestly? I like most of what we've seen so far, even if it's very little and even if it's not perfect. The visuals are amazing, far better than what I thought Illumination would be capable of. The color choice, texturing, and lighting is all really good. I think this is something everyone can agree on. Most Illumination films to me look extremely basic, passable and not really anything more, so I didn't think they'd be able to make something this pretty. I've gotta hand it to em though, this exceeded my expectations. Most of the voices are great. Everyone talks about Jack Black as Bowser, and he definitely stole the show here, but I think the voices for Toad and Kamek are great as well. The one issue that I'll agree with most other people on as well is that Mario's voice is literally just Chris Pratt's. One of my roommates said that it might have a Brooklyn accent that we haven't been able to notice because of how few lines have been said, but I dunno. I think they definitely could've leaned more into a voice more fitting for Mario without it straight up being Mario's high-pitched voice. I'll also say that I had to watch the trailer a second time to notice they were trying to be funny at some parts of it. The scene where they tried having all of that buildup for the penguins' attack being worthless was something I saw coming from a mile away, and the one penguin with the crossed eyes removed any doubt I had that this joke was coming. And there was like Toad's lines about the mushrooms, it's all just really juvenile honestly. And I feel like a lot of the people saying the movie's gonna be good now are being a bit quick on the draw. We still don't know anything about the plot or characters aside from a few of their voices. The effort the animators put into this could be taken as both studios caring about how this turned out, and the seven-year development of this might say something, but caring about how a movie turns out doesn't mean you know how to make an amazing plot or make amazing characters. Only time will tell though. I think at absolute worst this movie will be an okay time for you to turn your brain off to, and at best we may get something really special from this. We'll have to wait and see!
I love how there are already so many memes from just this one trailer. I'm not sure why I didn't expect that to happen.
it seems very fun. Only problem I have is Mario, have him either no voice like the games, or what would be fun is the original mario voice. I forgot the man name.
I had very low expectations for the Mario movie before the trailer, but I now feel pretty optimistic. The visual style is one of the clear standouts to me here. The whole look and style is just grand. I think Illumination's animation and visuals team did an outstanding job here. I can't stress this enough. Jack Black feels very natural as Bowser. I kind of wish they were just making a Bowser movie. Crisp Rat as Mario caught me off guard, but I think I could get used to it. That doesn't mean that I like his voice, but it does mean that I can accept it (though I wish they just used Charles Martinet). In short, I'm looking forward to it! It should be a charming experience at the least.
