I'm not sure why, but when I think 'mascot of the franchise', I don't always think 'best character'. In fact, at best, I tend to tolerate the mascots, but I find other characters to be more enjoyable. I think this makes sense...

...But it's no excuse for ignoring how good Raichu is. I mean, I picked it up on a whim twice (first in Y, then in Diamond), and both times it performed admirably, despite it's rather limited movepool (and my Diamond one having an Adamant nature). I think Raichu might just be one of my new favourite Electric Pokémon to use...

So, the real question I'm asking here is this: have you ever chosen a Pokémon to use on a whim, and then found out you really enjoyed using it?

Aside from Raichu, I'd also like to say Starmie (potentially from the same Y file). I picked it up later on, thanks to the Good Rod being so late in relation to the levels, and as a result, it was stuck behind everyone else on the team (about a ten level difference). It pulled it's weight, and that's a Pokémon I'd be interested in using again. Just need a game where it's available.

Nuzlockes and Wonderlockes have been my holy grail in terms of getting to love Pokémon I normally wouldn't use. My first X Nuzlocke had me fall in love with Dunsparce, whom is now one of my favorite Pokémon. It's not super strong in terms of stats, but with Serene Grace it can be deadly. It carried my team through a good number of the gyms and even landed the final blow on the champion's final Pokémon. I use Dunsparce whenever I can now!

Another Pokémon I grew to like because of a Wonderlocke is Elgyem and Beheeyem. I got an Elgyem in my Omega Ruby Wonderlocke as one of my first Pokémon, and it had its hidden ability Analytic and a beneficial nature, as well. It's slow as hell but it hits like a truck with its ability boosting its already powerful attacks and sky high special attack stat. I don't regret using it at all, it's one of my favorite underrated Pokémon!

There's a bunch more, but those are the main two that I really have grown to love.

I've really loved using Nidoking in X. It's great against Fairy types and, while I've never had a Poison type outside of those that come with a main grass typing, it's been my favorite so far. Good attack and special attack, really a solid addition if you know what to use him for.

This is the case for me too. I've only done a Nuzlocke once in my life (I didn't even finish it lol) and I fell in love with Pansear and Simisear. I always thought they were pretty weak, but it turns out they have a pretty great movepool and great stats. My Pansear (now a Simisear) quickly became the core of my Nuzlocke team.

I really want to do another Nuzlocke to see what Pokémon will surprise me next, but I haven't gotten to the point of starting one yet.

A while ago when I was in Showdown, I built a team consisting mostly of Pokémon I liked. I had a fairly solid team of six, until I found a weak link in my team who was really just dead weight. I subtracted that Pokémon, whoever they were, and decided I needed an Ice type to add some balance to my offensive coverage. I was going to go Regice, but I don't like using Legendaries, so I went Avalugg instead.

    And it was awesome.

That Avalugg, with the help of a Weakness Policy and Ice Ball, became a world-destroying offensive powerhouse, and I can probably credit three of my victories to it. Which, considering I've probably only won four or five Showdown battles, is actually a lot. Ever since then, Avalugg has been upgraded in my tastes from being a meh filler Pokémon to being pretty darn cool. All on a whim because someone else got cut from the team.
