TIME TRAVEL

I don't believe time travel is possible. And if it is, it is way more dangerous than we can possibly comprehend. The whole thing about not being seen, not having people recognize you, stuff like that? That's nonsense. Just by being in the past you're already changing it. And if you travel to the future, the present is now the past, and if you go back, then the future you went to will never exist.

So don't do time travel. It will probably kill you.

 

In my mind, time travel will never be possible, too many problems are involved, however, I feel that time viewing is well within possibility. Open a small temporal window and see how history truly went down, unable to influence, but able to learn. This would likely be only for the past, I like to think that the future isn't set, and so can't be viewed, whereas the past has happened.

 

It's a great concept to think about, but any good Time Travel based series (Doctor Who doesn't count) focuses on the time paradoxes and EVERYTHING bad that can occur. Some do it better than others, but the universal theme throughout them is that there are ALWAYS consequences that come from messing with Time Travel in any way, shape or form. So, most of those shows and or movies make me never want to mess with Time Travel.

As for is it possible? Well, I like to believe that either whenever I fuck up in life, I would've already come back from the future and stopped myself from screwing up or time machines are never going to be created. I honestly believe the latter option tho. The idea of freely going back and forth through time I don't think will ever work. In fact, the idea of D-Mails (Steins;Gate) feels more possible than proper time travel.

 

Well, the issue with time travel is that the only way to go back in time would be to go faster than light, but to go forwards in time, the time travel can only be perceived by you. I'll explain further; at the speed of light, time is perceived to be not passing at all for the object that is travelling at that speed, and so from that object's perspective (or person's) it would appear to have arrived at its destination instantly, but from outside perception, it would have taken x amount of time. However, travelling anywhere NEAR the speed of light would require a tremendous amount of energy, with the added risk that colliding with ANY molecules of gas (there are random molecules in every cubic kilometre of space) at that speed would cause enormous energy transfer which would probably destroy the spacecraft, and if not, make life hell for those inside by heating up the craft dramatically and killing them.

 

I think time travel is a cool and horrible idea. The amount of things you can mess up with time is terrifying. If you go back in time, you're subject to a time without any of our technological innovations such as modern medicine. You go to the future and you basically disappear from the present and lose the people you've ever known.

 

Oh I'd love to go back in time and deck myself, but I don't think it'd be possible either :< I mean, the past has already happened and we don't know what the future holds so.

 

Time travel would be great if it were made possible.
The sheer notion of going back thousands of years, it is amazing to fathom!
Though the closet thing I can think of to time travel is doctor who.

If on fictional shows, why not reality?

 

There are a few errors here. o: Time travel backwards is not possible, or haven't yet been theoritically proven to be possible. Travel close to the speed of light slows down local time enough such that time outside (for an observer) appears to be going faster.

An imaginary example; you are in a spacecraft travelling near the speed of light, and I'm on Earth. You take a clock up with you and you travel in your spacecraft for a couple of minutes (on your clock) but when you return, years would have passed here on Earth and thus you would have effectively travelled into the "future".

Also, you cannot travel at the speed of light, only very close to it. (At the speed of light, the time dilation is so great such that matter ceases to have mass as events take an ifnitely long time to occur and the Higgs field simply won't work as it does.)

Time travel would be pretty awesome, however, the idea of it messes with my rational thinking. I simply can't see it happening. As Dysnomia pointed out in his imaginary example, time travel to the future would be possible if we chose to use that method (even though we're not developed enough for that by far), but time travel to the past is most definitely impossible. It would screw up history too much and I really can't imagine it going well.
