A short time ahead in a galaxy not far,
far from here....

Humanity was a flourishing species with a high evolution rate and extremely hardy in terms of healing, recovery and endurance. They were the first race to engage in space travel, both for science and entertainment, but their limitations restricted them to their own solar system. Eventually they began to war amongst themselves more frequently, and with Earth's resources depleting, returned to the space race as each of the world's superpowers attempted to claim and colonize new planets. While in the midst of a particularly lengthy struggle to claim Mars, the humans observed a beast from beyond the stars crash land on Earth. World leaders were heard to exclaim 'it's like something out of a sci-fi movie' and 'we'd better run for it' and 'maybe it's friendly, let's not be hasty'. (This person was later fired.)​

Earth was ripped apart.​

A surviving crewman called Finn escaped on a ship and has been searching for a new home for quite some time. There were other crew members, but a baby tentacle monster was 'somehow' let on board. It turned out that the little ones are just as deadly as the great beast. Finn managed to eject the hungry monster out the airlock, but by then, the only other survivor was the cat.​

Anyway, the ship ran out of fuel over a planet, which thankfully, had no tentacles, killer plant people, giant spiders or taxes.​

First thing's first; the ship got pretty roughed up during the 'tentacle incident'. If Finn wants to go exploring the universe, he'll have to grab some supplies and fix the ship!​

A blonde scientist peered out of his cave as he heard the somewhat familiar sound of a teleporter.
Who could it be? I haven't seen another sapient being in ages! He thought.
Another human! This is my chance! The scientist leapt out and landed with a thud, using his arms to stabalise himself getting up from the ground.
"Hello! My name is Professor Hayden Dogwood. What, may I ask, is yours?"

 

Noticing the fellow's wary behaviour, Dogwood remembered that he was still holding his hunting knife and decided to put it away. Carefully avoiding the spew, he slowly approached 'Elliott' in a disarming manner.
"Space rookie, huh? There's nothing to worry about! Well, there is... but I'm not one of them!" He said, reassuringly.
"You see I came here to do some field research on the various forms of life on this planet, but the ship I came in was called back to Earth and has yet to come back for me!"

"It's dark out, so you should probably follow me to my temporary home if you wish to survive the night. We can discuss more when we get there!"

Once they managed to climb through the rocks in the cliffside, Professor Dogwood sat down and motioned for Elliott to do the same.
"So tell me a bit more about yourself, Elliott. What brings you to this planet? Where's the rest of your shipmates? Could you bring me back to Earth?"

 

"Earth is g... No, it can't be... What!? My ship... it must have been destroyed when it got there..." Dogwood started to hyperventilate and got up to pace around the cave.
"My family, my friends, my wife... Everyone is... no. You! You're alive!" Dogwood pointed at Elliott. "How many others survived? What happened to the others on your ship? Surely you didn't come here all by yourself!"

 

Slightly frustrated at the lack of explanation he was receiving, Prof Dogwood sat down again and placed his face into his palms in despair.
"You know what? Let's just get some rest for now. You can teleport back to your ship if you don't mind the risk of stepping outside. I'll be sleeping in this cave.

The next morning, Dogwood had gotten up early to fish his old matter manipulator out of one of his pod chests. "Lucky this still works..." he muttered to himself.

 

"Help with your ship, you say? I suppose I could! I recall you mentioning that you wanted wood earlier, so I thought I'd give you a hand. I'm not sure what punching trees would accomplish -other than bloody hands- but I took the liberty to knock down a few with this old thing." The professor patted his device. "The handy-dandy matter manipulator! An essential for any explorer! It can dislodge anything from obsidian to flowers, and it even compresses them for easy storage! Since they are distributed to all personnel participating in space travel, I'm assuming you have one?"

 

"Hmm, I'll have a look at it. Could you let me borrow your teleportation band?"

 

When they teleported onto the ship, Dogwood examined the damage. "Oh dear... Your ship's thrusters and FTL drive appear to be severely damaged. Nothing we can't fix though! A few core shards should do the trick for the thrusters. However, the FTL drive will need erchius crystals, which aren't found on this planet. Let's not worry about that for now though; once we get the thrusters working, we can look for the crystals elsewhere in this solar system."
