In the long and storied history of movies and television shows, there have been many flops and TV pilot failures. On occasion, we've been treated to the rare showing of an all-round entertaining package that is a combination of moving pictures and meticulously crafted audio tracks. Sure, such products achieved what they had intended to do; turn a pretty profit and be loved by targeted audiences. Still good, but not quite the stuff of legends.

This is where a rare breed of visual storytelling comes into play, properties that, whilst not always considered sublime in every regard, pressed the envelop in one regard or another, ultimately taking decisions that in, over a century of film making continue to break records and raise expectations. These slices of script to screen drams are the trend-setters, the source material that many of today's filmmakers look back upon with high regard and become inspired by them.

What movies and/other TV shows do you consider to be trend-setting?

Some examples worthy of note are Seven Samurai (1954), The Blair Witch Project (1999), Die Hard (1988), Crime Scene Investigation (2000), Mahoutsukai Sally( 1966), Akira (1998), Groundhog Day (1993), Iron Man (2008) and Metropolis (1927), not to mention many, many more all-time greats.

Maybe Breaking Bad? I think it set a pretty good example for what a good show should be like. It is just so darn good, I don't think I'll find anything that good again.
