Thoughts on this? Do you think Sony was right to cancel the movie "The Interview". The movie caused Sony to be hacked due to the controversial subject that it based around, the assassination of North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un.

It was pulled because of various threats and the hacks themselves, but showdown briefly in select Cinemas and online. Do you think they were right to pull it from major release?

I think pulling it was giving in and when you give in, they'll try to take away more. I don't think they should've taken it down, that's letting them get rid of Freedom of Speech/Press, imo.

Despite the sensitive subject, I do agree. Though in my opinion, it's not about freedom - it's more the fact that Kim Jong Un really is a terrible person. He imprisons so many people every day, has hundreds of thousands of people in prison camps, gorges on food whilst his people starve and even more.

The movie was really in hot water ever since it was announced. The movie may have been satirical, but there was no way Kim Jong Un wasn't going to take an offence to it. I wasn't expecting a hack of Sony, but I definitely figured he would verbalize his displeasure. But it was already released by the time of the hack, so cancelling it just really gave Kim Jong Un his way. I think the decision was more of "do we risk the company with more hacks or other attacks on the company?" And based on that, maybe they shouldn't have risked keeping it around.

I'm not sure that canceling the movie was the right decision, but I think it was a safe one.

North korea can do what ever it likes inside their borders, but nothing gives them right to threat other countries! Sony pulling off the movie was an overreaction. They did it to protect everyone. But when they realized North Korea has no recourses to "attack the teathers" on American soil, they released. And now ots one of the best selling movies. Go figure.

I dont even believe that North Korea exist to the end of 2020. Its rotting so badly. And "The Interview" has all rights to exisist.

Actually, technically it can't do whatever it wants. Humans rights groups are mad at them 24/7 because of what they do inside their borders.

I think Sony made the right move to cancel The Interview. After the hack, it really caused a huge scandal about that movie that less than many people would have cared about otherwise. However, it really was for the safety of the public, to protect them from what could have been the beginning of a war.

However, I do understand where North Korea is coming from about how this movie would be an act of terrorism against Korea, since it is about the assassination of their leader. Imagine it from their point of view, even if Kim Jong Un is a terrible person. Imagine if someone made a film about killing President Obama or the Queen of England? It would stir up a whole bunch of controversy, regardless if it was based off comedy.

North Korea and Western countries have vast cultural differences, and the fact that we're laughing at the cost of the pride of another country, can cause huge and scary consequences.

The thing is though - you just can't compare places like Japan and South Korea with how terrible North Korea is. Heck, even China isn't that bad. Putting your people in prison camps, killing them in public, tearing families apart and forcing them to believe in their leader as a god is terrible.

Actually, I was wrong. They aren't forced. They all genuinely believe him as a god which is actually a lot worse, and a lot scarier when you think about it. I see no harm in insulting the pride of such a terrible place. What are they to be prideful about anyways? How many lives they have damaged?

The thing is, this kind of thing has happened in the past before. Take the Christian Crusades and the Holocaust, which both killed tons of people, for example. People's beliefs have always gotten the best of them.

North Korea is pretty much a hermit kingdom. Those people don't really know the outside world, and have always been looking at their "Dear Leader" and worship him for all the good things in their life. The government itself use a brutally repressive system of political control to ensure their domination over society, employing extreme measures, including collective punishment, public executions, and political prison camps. The people in general are malnourished, and many are going blind or have a disability.

I feel like their pride lies in the faith that their dictator won't kill them if they worship him. That they're still alive because of his decision not to kill everyone.

That isn't right though, they shouldn't have to feel that way, they shouldn't be made to feel that way. I see nothing prideful at all about North Korea, not even in the slightest which is hard for me to say. It is under the shadow of South Korea which became a way better place. No where is perfect, but North Korea is really awful. I hope it can change so badly for the people that live there and suffer every day because of it.
